3.0 out of 5 stars Atom splits himself in half.
My inital thoughts going into this piece were: "Gee, how's Atom & his package going to redfine music?" This must be some groovy wax dropped off from the future via Doc Brown & his Delorean. Nope. A few songs in, and this turned out to be The Bugles "Video Killed The Radio Star" in reduex. A poppy little two piece band consisting of Atom and his...

To those of you who know and love Atom, this album is a great step forward for him. Atom has always been inventive and eloquent, but this album contains some of his most musically tight and humorously thought-provoking work.

Atom is often wrongly dismissed as a synth-pop novelty singer. He is, however, a talented singer/songwriter who does his absolute best with the tools at hand. His songs are often personal, but never feel exclusive. They are genuinely humorous, but are also quite poiniant. This humorous/serious mix is most evident in both "Anarchy means that I litter" and "If you own the Washington Redskins...".

He is also a gifted arranger, evident in his covers of The Mountain Goats songs, including "the Seed Song" and "Going to Georgia". The wonderful originals are simply one man on an acoustic guitar and Atom transforms them into rich, melodic pieces without losing any their original feeling.

To truly appreciate him, see him live (he tours constantly; check his website). His energy is astounding and infectious, he gives his all no matter how small the show. If you enjoy music created by corporate authority, Atom and his Package will be easy to ignore. If not, try it. It's like musical broccolli: an acquired taste, but very, very good for you!

4.0 out of 5 stars He's a good artist, April 24, 2004

Atom is not the most talented musically, but he makes up for it with his lyrics and catchy rythms that he creates instead. His songs can be just flat out weird and funny and some of his songs have complex views on Todays society. He is very smart and it comes through in his music. I reccomend this cd is your into something different and have eclectic tastes.

I bought this CD after hearing the song "Punk Rock Academy" on a comp. album. I love this cd. The first time I put it in I laughed, I cried, I was an Atom and his Package fan!

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably my favorite Atom and his Package CD, June 8, 2003

Who ever knew being a geek could be so fun. (j/k) I love this CD so much. Adam Goren is a very funny and talented song writer. Yes, the music is different than a lot of the stuff you hear today, but it's different in a good way. This or A Society of People named Eliu, is my favorite ATom Cd. Atom also does some great covers of good songs. I don't really care for the cover off of this CD. (it's not Atom, it's Madonna) Well, I think that this CD holds some very good songs. So give it a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Atom is the funniest person alive, February 11, 2003

Atom and his package is aboslutely amazing. The reviewer who gave this cd one star knows nothing when it comes to music. These cd's are really really good, but the CD's do no justice to Atm live. He is a genious and one of the funniest people alive. Despite how amazing of a song it is, Shopping Spree is amazing because the story that he tells before playing it live is one of the funniest things I have ever heard in my whole life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Top-Notch Atom, August 14, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Redefining Music (Audio CD)
Another great album from Atom...in 'Redefining Music' he beefs up his sound a bit with a guitar and on some songs, such as "Shopping Spree" and "Cross Country...", he rocks pretty damn hard. His knack for catchy hooks and silly but sometimes poignant lyrics is sharp as ever. And his cover of Madonna's "Open Your Heart" is very well-done. Perhaps his strongest set of songs? Definitely his most accessable album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Be Realistic., April 17, 2001
This review is from: Redefining Music (Audio CD)
All right. There's one review of this disc, and I think it does Atom little justice. Don't purchase this disc thinking the "Redefining Music" will do what it implies. Atom and His Package are a fun, and by today's standards, unique, exploration of synth pop. The band is Atom and, well, his package (a Casio keyboard). Atom's music has always been fun, and continues on in that tradition here. Attempting to describe the music will do it little justice. Just imagine a guy and a keyboard, mix in some "live" drums and guitar at times, and you have Atom (don't run away just yet).

The lyrics are often times flat out silly, but guess what: they're not meant to be tremendously thought provoking. And when he wants to be, you'll know. See the previous review--Atom does make some political statements.

I can't speak for Atom (as much as I'd like to), but this may be because he has punk rock roots. He used to be in a band called Fracture (if you'd like to hear Atom in a different capacity), and the true beginnings of punk are political in nature. At times, Atom is political, but he maintains a humorous, borderline snotty tone, and while his views may not be your bag, the songs are still fun.

If you want to hear groundbreaking music that will "redefine" your aural being, look elsewhere. Atom is fun, his music is fun, and he makes me smile. My guess is he'll do the same for you if given the chance.

A poppy little two piece band consisting of Atom and his Radio Shack keyboard player. It says in the linear notes: Recorded in my living room. And that about sums it up. Now, don't get me wrong. This will have your foot tapping the break as you drive, but it's sugary tone wont last long on repeat in the disc changer.

The high point of this album is a cover of Madonna's Open Your Heart. But that fun is ruined by songs such as The Owner of the Washington Redskins is a (see album label for bad word yourself). I'm not into political music, and found these moments out of place with the over-all tone that Atom seems to be trying to achieve.

If you like BS2000, Weezer, our Pop-on-synth, then this album is for you.

ps - The album's title doesn't emply that this CD is going to redfine music...i think it means, if you're going to redefine yourself, then this is the music to redefine to.

5.0 out of 5 stars 2nd Best Atom CD, November 21, 2004
This review is from: Redefining Music (Audio CD)
Altough I don't own the first Atom album I can tell by the set list that is the best album. If you don't love Shopping Spree you are on crack!! "We got a 12 string fretless bass, you stole are song now will rock your face!". This cd doesn't stray at all from punk like most artist have been lately. The soul of punk music burns strongly in this cd. Isn't it really the truth that "Anarchy means that you liter"?
