Glen David Andrews is the real deal. The music here is distinctively NOLA but the Big Easy is a sound, not a genre, so Glen David Andrews mixes things up with an eclectic variety of styles that include Funk, Gospel, Jazz, Soul, Rock and Christian Contemporary. For starters, let's talk about the voice; if you've never heard Glen David Andrews, his vocals are amazing. It's like Willie Dixon meets James Brown. The album kicks off with 'NY To Nola.' It's a great autobiographical song that plays New Orleans Rock. Many of the Rock songs on "Redemption" sound remarkably similar to the Crescent City's best Rock band, Galactic. As it turns out, this is no coincidence as the project features Galactic's Ben Ellman, who also produced an album for Glen David Andrews' cousin, Trombone Shorty. Featuring Ivan Neville, 'Chariot' is a sweet gospel number. The funk gets turned on high for 'Bad By Myself.' In this song, the horns cook! For 'Didn't It Rain,' Andrews is assisted by the The Queen of Gospel, Mahalia Jackson. They sing a moving gospel song about the flood that will get anybody clapping or toe tapping. Accompanied by Jamison Ross, 'Surrender' is Contemporary Christian: "What is a woman who gains the world and all these material things / I'd rather have Jesus in my life." 'Kool Breeze (Glen's Season)' is a great Jazz instrumental. It will inspire anybody to get up and shake their bones. Never afraid to combine the sacred with the secular, 'Movin' Up' is another Christian Contemporary offering. Playing Rock, 'Lower Power' features Anders Osborne, who previously worked with Galactic, Toots and the Maytals, and Karl Denson. 'You Don't Know' is the highlight on the album. It's an anthemic Jazz/Rock/Funk tune. 'Something to Believe In' makes for a chill closer.Read more ›

I caught his U-tube performance of Dr. John's Walk on Gilded Splinters and bought his last two albums. One of the best covers of Dr. John ever. Glen is a cousin of Trombone Shorty, also plays the trombone and is a gritty soulful singer. He had some trouble in his life, both legal and drug-related and this album is about redemption and recovery. This is great stuff, drenched in New Orleans funk.As Wolfman Jack used to say: "you gonna love it to death baby". Hope he goes on the road; he is electrifying live.
