Book Description

The world’s vampire population is on the brink of starvation since the vaccine to treat a global pandemic rendered human blood deadly to them. Their only hope for survival is a handful of rural areas that the vaccine never breached. The tiny town of Penton, Alabama, is one such enclave, where the immortal Aidan Murphy has established a community of vampires and their willingly bonded humans. Together, they live in peace—until Aidan’s estranged brother descends upon the town and begins attacking its humans. Whether the rampage is a result of his centuries-old feud with Aidan or the civil war threatening to erupt in the vampire world matters not. All that matters is the blood. Desperate to save his adopted family, Aidan breaks one of his cardinal rules, kidnapping an unvaccinated human doctor—and unexpectedly falling in love for the first time in nearly four hundred years. Sensual and thrilling, Redemption is the first installment of what is sure to be a darkly addictive new series from paranormal romance novelist Susannah Sandlin.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

"Sandlin’s characters and romance plot are compelling, and she adds new elements to traditional vampire adventures; for example, a vaccine that keeps human blood safe from vampires. Vampire and paranormal romance fans will enjoy this one, especially if they like Katie MacAlister."

Review

"Vampires and the concept of human 'prey' take on new meaning in Sandlin's contemporary tale of survival and love...the story is fast paced and filled with well-developed characters. Redemption is the first book of The Penton Legacy, and readers will anxiously await the sequels!" --RT Reviews, 4 1/2 stars, HOT

3.0 out of 5 stars Promising debut May 2, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
The positives: the author is a decent writer, and she works to develop her characters. This is a full length story with an actual plot that contains a couple of tasteful sex scenes, not just sex scenes with a minor plot as filler. The premise is interesting, namely, a respectful, symbiotic relationship between a group of vampires and their familiars, and the forces and circumstances that align to destroy that.

The several cons: the heroine, the instant "love" between the two leads, and the treatment of women. The heroine is a doctor, very independent . . . until she falls in lust, oops, I meant love, with a vampire she just met. You know, the one who lied to her, bit her without her consent, mesmerized her repeatedly and put her life in jeopardy. Because, really, that is what strong, intelligent women do! Just not believable, and yes, I know that we are talking about a vampire story, but I really wish the author would have gone down another path in this area. All in all, though, an entertaining read.

Redemption captured me from the very first page and never let me go. First off I want to say that the above discription is extremely accurate and I really cannot ad much to it. So I will get right to the point - I freakin' loved this book. This was a keep-you-up-all-night and can-not-put-down kind of book. I enjoyed the diversity in characters as well as the relationships between each of them. The world building was clear and defined and felt I fully understood the reality that Susannah Sandlin built in Penton, Alabama. The character descriptions are beautifully written:

"He'd pulled his dark hair into a short ponytail except for one wavy strand that had pulled loose and blew against his cheek. The streetlight cast enough illumination for her to see the dark lashes fringing blue eyes that reminded her not so much of summer skies or robin's eggs but the richness of an arctic sea flowing over darker depths. They appeared to lighten as he studied her with an intensity that almost robbed her lungs of air. he had a strong jaw, full lips, and a slight cleft in his chin. If he was a serial killer, he was at least a pretty one."

*swoon*

After such steamy descriptions and serious tones typically Krys' internal dialog kicks in to something humorous and light.

"He cleared his throught. "Are you Dr. Harris?"

"Krys caught her breath. Good Lord, what was wrong with her? She'd been practically drooling through a half-open window as though he were Adonis personified. he could be Charles Manson's separated-at-birth, unidentical twin."

The chemistry felt natural and not too in your face and overly mushy. It flowed with the story and the situation and came together nicely in the end.

Also - addiction - this has been an ongoing topic with me.. why do SO many authors leave this bit of reality out of their stories? I have a theory to this, but that is a topic best left to its own post. Susannah Sandlin created a town where some of the residents are recovered addicts and are trusted and productive members of their town. This was a comfortable and believable fit to this world and I enjoyed the depth that it added.

Overall this was a completely enjoyable read. It had romance, action, and diverse characters and I enjoyed every page!

I rate Redemption 4.5 out of 5 Bullets!

*I received this copy as a gift from the author with no promise of a good review

4.0 out of 5 stars easy read May 17, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This was an enjoyable read, especially on the nice rainy evening when I got home from work. Love story with a twist, but made for a nice evening and am looking forward to seeing the following books to continue with the saga.
While kind of follows the vampire story lines of many other stories, the characters were interesting to get to know.
