From Publishers Weekly

Sarah Cain is happyAwith her urban townhouse, her BMW, her success as a real estate broker in Portland, Ore. Her days are brimming over with e-mail, phone calls, appointments and closings, and that's just the way she likes it. The best thing about her self-absorbed existence is that she has broken free of the shadow of her controlling older sister, Ivy, a widow who lives with her five children in an Amish community in Lancaster County, Pa. Sarah, a nonbeliever, never supported Ivy's decision to embrace the Plain People. She considers it a type of punishment to keep the children from enjoying a normal American lifestyle. But it's none of her business, at least not until she receives word that Ivy has met an untimely death, and has named Sarah as her children's guardian. At first resentful that she must travel 3,000 miles to tend to some children who are essentially strangers, Sarah discovers that she appreciates a simpler way of life. She chafes, however, under Amish scrutiny and the expectations of five grieving orphans. Sarah endeavors to remain emotionally aloof from the children while trying to make decisions about their futureAa struggle, especially since the eldest looks and acts so much like Ivy. Lewis, author of The Shunning and other books set in Lancaster County, offers sympathetic characters, an endearing setting and good pacing, though Sarah's formulaic Christian redemption is a bit sudden. More About the Author

I've had my nose in a book, for as long as I remember. When I was about 9 years old, I started writing my own stories. By sixth grade, I'd hand-written a 66-page semi-autobiographical book titled, "She Shall Have Music."

After I was married and our three children were in middle school, I began submitting articles and short fiction to various magazines.

My first book (Holly's First Love) was published in May 1993, the start of a 14-book series for pre-teen girls. Soon after, my first chapter book was published for 7-10-year-old readers ("Big Bad Beans") which later became part of my 24-book series, The Cul-de-Sac Kids. I wrote another long-running series for girls, titled "SummerHill Secrets," which was set very close to Neffsville, PA, where I grew up--near the heart of Amish country.

But it was the story of my grandmother Ada Buchwalter's shunning by her ultra-strict father and subsequently her old order Mennonite community that nudged me toward writing adult fiction. THE SHUNNING was published in 1997 by Bethany House Publishers, and along with its sequels, has touched a nerve in millions of readers intrigued by the Plain culture of Lancaster County, PA. The Hallmark Channel will air the movie, "Beverly Lewis's The Shunning" on April 16, 2011 at 9 EDT/8 Central.

My passion for Amish-related stories continues to keep me up at night, and I'm presently writing the third book in my new series: The Rose Trilogy, due out September '11.

When I'm between writing deadlines, I enjoy hiking in the Rocky Mountains with my husband. Cooking from scratch, playing Mozart at the piano, and making family memory albums, as well as traveling to meet my devoted readers during book tours, are some of my very favorite things. I also adore reading biographies and memoirs, as well as classic literature.

Book Two of my present series: THE JUDGMENT, will be released on April 5, 2011.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but a little disappointed, August 20, 2000

I've read all of Beverly Lewis' books but the Sunroom, and have loved all of them. The Redemption of Sarah Cain, I read in little over a day. I thought it was really good. I liked how the character Sarah Cain was portrayed. How she was so in love with her life and her material things, it started to make me angry. =) Once I started to get towards the end of the book, I thought there was going to be a sequel, because I didn't feel it could have ended in so little of pages left. Well this was the disappointing part for me, within the last 15 pages of the book, everything was solved. I thought the entire book had a good pace but at the end it just went so quickly. I was glad it was a happy ending though. Please don't take me wrong it was a VERY good book and really worth reading. I look forward as always to reading the next book from her.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book!, September 15, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Redemption of Sarah Cain (Paperback)
This was another great Beverly Lewis based on the life of the Amish. I am fascinated with the Amish. This story is about Sarah Cain whose widowed sister dies living behind 5 young children and requests Sarah as guardian to raise the children. Sarah and Ivy were not raised Amish but Ivy and her husband had joined the New-Order Amish. Sarah is a big city gal with a career and must choose between her familiar lifestyle and a much different life in Lancaster County. During this time she must work through many issues that have been troubling her for years. Reading this book is further insight into the Amish lifestyle and the children is this book are enjoyable and inspirational.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the best, but still great, May 13, 2005
This review is from: The Redemption of Sarah Cain (Paperback)
I've read almost all of the other Bev Lewis books and while this one isn't like them in too many ways, I still could tell who the author was and I still enjoyed it.

A lot of reviewers have stated that they didn't like the main character, Sarah Cain. I think that's the whole point. She is completely unlovable because of many deep secrets and scars, and time away from "her perfect world" is just what she needed!

I did enjoy this book, I would read it again, I am going to buy it when I get the chance. My only suggestion would be: if you're not sure, read it first, then decide if you like it or not.
