4.0 out of 5 stars Good but a little disappointed
I've read all of Beverly Lewis' books but the Sunroom, and have loved all of them. The Redemption of Sarah Cain, I read in little over a day. I thought it was really good. 3.0 out of 5 stars somewhat predictable and "sappy"
I, like many of the other reviewers, am a fan of Lewis, but was somewhat disappointed with Sarah Cain. It has a great basis for the plot: yuppie, materialistic, twentysomething Sarah (who's running from her past, incidentally) inherits five orphans from her deceased, yet estranged, older sister who just happens to be Amish. Like many of Lewis's books, I gained greater...

I've read all of Beverly Lewis' books but the Sunroom, and have loved all of them. The Redemption of Sarah Cain, I read in little over a day. I thought it was really good. I liked how the character Sarah Cain was portrayed. How she was so in love with her life and her material things, it started to make me angry. =) Once I started to get towards the end of the book, I thought there was going to be a sequel, because I didn't feel it could have ended in so little of pages left. Well this was the disappointing part for me, within the last 15 pages of the book, everything was solved. I thought the entire book had a good pace but at the end it just went so quickly. I was glad it was a happy ending though. Please don't take me wrong it was a VERY good book and really worth reading. I look forward as always to reading the next book from her.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book!, September 15, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Redemption of Sarah Cain (Paperback)
This was another great Beverly Lewis based on the life of the Amish. I am fascinated with the Amish. This story is about Sarah Cain whose widowed sister dies living behind 5 young children and requests Sarah as guardian to raise the children. Sarah and Ivy were not raised Amish but Ivy and her husband had joined the New-Order Amish. Sarah is a big city gal with a career and must choose between her familiar lifestyle and a much different life in Lancaster County. During this time she must work through many issues that have been troubling her for years. Reading this book is further insight into the Amish lifestyle and the children is this book are enjoyable and inspirational.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the best, but still great, May 13, 2005
This review is from: The Redemption of Sarah Cain (Paperback)
I've read almost all of the other Bev Lewis books and while this one isn't like them in too many ways, I still could tell who the author was and I still enjoyed it.

A lot of reviewers have stated that they didn't like the main character, Sarah Cain. I think that's the whole point. She is completely unlovable because of many deep secrets and scars, and time away from "her perfect world" is just what she needed!

I did enjoy this book, I would read it again, I am going to buy it when I get the chance. My only suggestion would be: if you're not sure, read it first, then decide if you like it or not.

5.0 out of 5 stars Page-turning, heart-warming!, August 29, 2000

How does Beverly Lewis keep coming up with such true-to-life characters? They are alive and well in Amish country! I experienced real sorrow for Sarah, grieved Lydia's loss, and prayed for a loving, commited family to nurture the orphaned youngsters. Any hope of a sequel??

5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT BOOK WITH FUTURE POSSIBILITIES, July 22, 2002
This review is from: The Redemption of Sarah Cain (Paperback)
Redemption was the first Beverly Lewis book I have read and I absolutely loved it. Having lived next to an Amish community I do understand some of that which goes on. The book was very realistic as far as Amish customs goes. The character of Sarah Cain was at first very disturbing as she was so conceided but I liked the gradual change that is seen in her throughout the book. Excellent and recommend to those who are religious and enjoy reading about the Amish Community.

4.0 out of 5 stars What would you do?, November 9, 2002
This review is from: The Redemption of Sarah Cain (Paperback)
What would you do if the sister you haven't really seen in 12 years dies, and has decreed in her will that you are to be the guardian of her 5 kids? Sarah Cain has to find that out for herself. This is a marvelous book of self-discovery. Sarah has to finally decide which is more important--money or family.

A wonderful book about overcoming past tragedy and understanding what family really means.

4.0 out of 5 stars Happily Ever After, August 16, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Redemption of Sarah Cain (Paperback)
Sarah Cain was a lost soul until she had to find homes for her orphan nieces and nephews. When she saw how rewarding the Plain life was, she knew she was HOME. The ending was a little sappy, but still-it was happily ever after!

3.0 out of 5 stars somewhat predictable and "sappy", May 6, 2001
This review is from: The Redemption of Sarah Cain (Paperback)
I, like many of the other reviewers, am a fan of Lewis, but was somewhat disappointed with Sarah Cain. It has a great basis for the plot: yuppie, materialistic, twentysomething Sarah (who's running from her past, incidentally) inherits five orphans from her deceased, yet estranged, older sister who just happens to be Amish. Like many of Lewis's books, I gained greater understanding of the Amish life, but otherwise, the book was just too predictable. The less-than-dramatic last-minute conversion of Sarah Cain was a bit "sappy" and tied up all the loose ends on the last page of the book just all too neatly. Lewis is capable of better.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice - but only 2 stars for this "booklet"., August 25, 2000

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Redemption of Sarah Cain (Paperback)
Beverly Lewis is one of my favorite writers, but this time, she failed to have enought story line to fill a whole book!

Sarah Cain, 28, is a successful real estate broker living in Portland, Oregon. She is financially well off, but suffers from an unresolved guilt from a past accident which killed a little girl. She is evading, and running from her chance of happiness with Bryan.

Sarah has long been partially estranged from her only sister, 34 yr. old Ivy. Therefore, when widowed Ivy dies unexpectedly, Sarah is shocked that her will names Sarah as guardian for the five orphaned minor children.

Ivy's family is Amish, living on a large farm in Lancaster County, PA. Heavily featured in this book is the oldest child, 16 yr. old Lydia. Disciplined, dutiful and sensitive, Lydia fills in as mother until Sarah can arrive. She is biding her time until she can marry Levi King.

Sarah's selfish independence and her love of wealth and its' trappings conflict with the simple, Amish lifestyle of her nephews and nieces. Therefore, she sets about to solve her uncomfortable new status quickly by flying to Lancaster for one week, during which time she is determined to find a nice Amish home for the children.

Obviously, Beverly Lewis has a future for this fractured family, and the ending is all too abrupt and predictable, not at all like her 3 book Shunning series. That, in particular is why I gave the book only 2 stars. The material is great and it was interesting, but there was not nearly enough to fill a complete book and I was disappointed with its' lack of depth.

4.0 out of 5 stars The supporting cast was great!, October 1, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Redemption of Sarah Cain (Paperback)
I had a hard time warming up to the heroine of this story. She was very self absorbed, and I thought she lacked just normal human compassion. However, I loved all of the other characters and enjoyed the description of Amish life. Since their personalities were so strong, it carried the story when I was finding it very hard to tolerate the main character(a lot of eye rolling, and heavy sighs on my part). Eventually, Sarah became more tolerable, though I never really liked her that much. I guess it says a lot for the author that she populated her book with enough people I could empathize with, that despite the one glaring problem(Sarah), I really enjoyed the story, and would buy another by her.
