Your Guide to the Frontier..., May 19, 2010
This review is from: Red Dead Redemption Signature Series Strategy Guide (Bradygames Signature Series) (Paperback)
One word describes this book when I set about labeling it... AWESOME. I decided to grab this up because of how large the game is. I had some issues with Just Cause 2 in finding the very small things to get 100% in some towns/cities so I wanted to avoid that with this game. Picking up the book I was surprised at how thick it was and detailed the graphics were (back cover art, included map, etc). They really did a solid job on constructing this (which doesn't feel at all flimsy like some guides).
When I opened it up I first counted the pages. There's 336 total "real" pages with a foldout map poster included (which could count as 2 more pages as its front and back). I then checked the contents section and loved how they broke it down (note that parenthesis's are page numbers):

This guide literally goes into EVERY aspect of this game. It is so detailed I could probably follow it through to the end reading every piece of information along the way, and STILL have more to read afterwards. It guarantees 100% completion if you use the information so as of release it should be good. Downside to these things and which is why I never get any for MMO's, is that if content is added or changed it is no longer complete/accurate. But for this type of game I can deal with that even with the co-op expansion coming soon.
There is also a map included that displays the 16 major locations (each with a details section explaining what it's all about). It's perforated so you can pull it out and view the entire map while playing. It's made in "hi-def" so it looks pretty sharp. It's on standard guide paper so its thick but nothing special (some games come with special maps map out of special materials).
With such detailed information you really can't go wrong with this guide. Each of the sections above that I listed have sub-categories but I didn't list them as I don't want anything ruined for the player like me, that wants this book for as I go along and not to read through it and know what's coming. Some sections like the shops list where certain items can be found (certain towns) what is required, the cost, and everything else in between.
Enough said, go get this if you hope to complete the game 100%. Brady Games made a great product here and I'm glad I bought it. With Amazons poor availability on this item, I had to go elsewhere and pay full price. It was still worth it.

Complete your Wild West experience, May 30, 2010
This review is from: Red Dead Redemption Signature Series Strategy Guide (Bradygames Signature Series) (Paperback)
Length:: 1:09 Mins
While the game itself gives you a very good experience of the Wild West, this guide book seeks to complete that experience.
This guide book is really comprehensive. The beautiful illustrations, such as the one on the cover, are just the beginning. Inside, you'll find details to all the missions, side missions, items, weapons, shops, challenges, mini-games, bounty, treasures, trophies and so much more.
All the information is concise and nicely laid out and easy to follow. The screenshots are satisfying huge as you would expect from a 340-page thick guide.
What I like particularly is the section on the game basics/logic, or in other words, the law of the land. It covers the honor system, bounty basics, law and enforcement. It's very helpful to understand the game mechanics at the start, especially on how your honor and fame affects the people around you.
There's also a huge foldout poster map that covers all the towns. Behind the map is a beautiful illustration Miss MacFarlane holding her shotgun. This map is in addition to the other maps provided. All of them are properly labeled, making sure you can locate what you need.
To get 100% completion, you need to complete every task, even the mundane. Events like Stranger tasks (18 in total) only scores 0.5% each, similar to finding a piece of new outfit. I personally won't be able to discover all those side missions by myself, ever. Whether you want to collect wildflowers or raid a bear's cave, there's is always something written.
For multiplayer, there's a list all the unlockables and how you can get them. They are things like guns and horses, etc. There are also many tips on the multiplayer gameplay provided by the Rockstar multiplayer test team.
This guide will complete your Wild West experience. Seriously.

One of the Best Guides I've Ever Used, January 18, 2011
This review is from: Red Dead Redemption Signature Series Strategy Guide (Bradygames Signature Series) (Paperback)
I'm one of those people; I buy game guides for every game I buy. I can't stand wasting time and while I love gaming, to me part of the fun is discovering things on your own, while the other part is to make sure you're not going horribly awry. I'd argue that most games are pretty straightforward, but as Red Dead has won Game of the Year from a few places, I think it goes without saying that there is a lot going on in this game. I've never used a better guide, to be honest, or I can't think of one.
The guide is broken up into the different parts of the game, Act I, Act II, Act II and other activities. There's a great section in the back about ambient challenges and online play. The Trophy section is a little light, and with more and more expansion packs, the guide can't possibly keep up. Thanks to the guide, yesterday, I completed 100% of the game.
In this game, that's not a small feat. While I did that, there are a few things that I found challenging. The duelling portion of the game, while not huge, is still not explained in great detail. I found better information online about how to win duels than in the book. The map pull-out in the back I found as a good bookmark, but that was pretty much it. I really wish, for games of this size, that the guide had a pull-out checklist, like the one that came with Kindgom Hearts. This way, as you do things, you can check them off. I'd missed one bounty and was at 99.9 %, though the guide does break down by percentage point, so it helped there, but I couldn't remember where to check where I'd missed the bounty, so I ended up all over the map.
Overall, this is a very well-organised guide with really vital information to get through the game with 100% completion, and in a game like this, those bragging rights are worth something.
