Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

"Sandlin’s characters and romance plot are compelling, and she adds new elements to traditional vampire adventures; for example, a vaccine that keeps human blood safe from vampires. Vampire and paranormal romance fans will enjoy this one, especially if they like Katie MacAlister."

Review

"Vampires and the concept of human 'prey' take on new meaning in Sandlin's contemporary tale of survival and love...the story is fast paced and filled with well-developed characters. Redemption is the first book of The Penton Legacy, and readers will anxiously await the sequels!" --RT Reviews, 4 1/2 stars, HOT

The positives: the author is a decent writer, and she works to develop her characters. This is a full length story with an actual plot that contains a couple of tasteful sex scenes, not just sex scenes with a minor plot as filler. The premise is interesting, namely, a respectful, symbiotic relationship between a group of vampires and their familiars, and the forces and circumstances that align to destroy that.

The several cons: the heroine, the instant "love" between the two leads, and the treatment of women. The heroine is a doctor, very independent . . . until she falls in lust, oops, I meant love, with a vampire she just met. You know, the one who lied to her, bit her without her consent, mesmerized her repeatedly and put her life in jeopardy. Because, really, that is what strong, intelligent women do! Just not believable, and yes, I know that we are talking about a vampire story, but I really wish the author would have gone down another path in this area. All in all, though, an entertaining read.

Redemption captured me from the very first page and never let me go. First off I want to say that the above discription is extremely accurate and I really cannot ad much to it. So I will get right to the point - I freakin' loved this book. This was a keep-you-up-all-night and can-not-put-down kind of book. I enjoyed the diversity in characters as well as the relationships between each of them. The world building was clear and defined and felt I fully understood the reality that Susannah Sandlin built in Penton, Alabama. The character descriptions are beautifully written:

"He'd pulled his dark hair into a short ponytail except for one wavy strand that had pulled loose and blew against his cheek. The streetlight cast enough illumination for her to see the dark lashes fringing blue eyes that reminded her not so much of summer skies or robin's eggs but the richness of an arctic sea flowing over darker depths. They appeared to lighten as he studied her with an intensity that almost robbed her lungs of air. he had a strong jaw, full lips, and a slight cleft in his chin. If he was a serial killer, he was at least a pretty one."

*swoon*

After such steamy descriptions and serious tones typically Krys' internal dialog kicks in to something humorous and light.

"He cleared his throught. "Are you Dr. Harris?"

"Krys caught her breath. Good Lord, what was wrong with her? She'd been practically drooling through a half-open window as though he were Adonis personified. he could be Charles Manson's separated-at-birth, unidentical twin."

The chemistry felt natural and not too in your face and overly mushy. It flowed with the story and the situation and came together nicely in the end.

In Susannah Sandlin's new series, Penton Legacy, a vampire's nightmare is realized when human blood, their major food source, is no longer readily available. Vaccinated human blood for an unrelated pandemic has proven deadly to their kind, making supply low and demand high. With their race on the brink of starvation, a civil war looms. This becomes a problem for master vampire, Aidan Murphy, who has managed to create a small peaceful community in Penton, Alabama with vampires and unvaccinated willing human donors. Only one thing is missing--a doctor. Aidan plans to remedy this by recruiting Dr. Krystal Harris with or without her consent. This obviously creates tension, but maybe it creates something else too...

Maybe it's the timing, but this book really didn't work for me. I am typically not a big insta-love fan, which is a major part of this book. I had to pick it up and put it down more than once, eventually planning to give up altogether until I found an opportunity to finish it while doing a mindless task.

The writing isn't the worst, but the overall impression came across as more formulaic than I was hoping because the synopsis seemed pretty interesting. It has occasional action and a truly deplorable villain whose inevitable demise is certainly easy to root for, but I believe the overall execution and world building could have been better. The ideas weren't fleshed out well enough in favor of more mundane and uninteresting details.

It's a kindle Prime freebie, so it doesn't break the bank, but I don't feel the need to continue with this one.

Unlike many other reviewers, I found this read to be like a ride on a snail's back. The author is definitely setting up a series. I applaud her efforts in character development; BUT, her choice for her main characters: a whiny doctor and brooding master vampire, not so much. Their backgrounds were told and retold to the point that my empathy bled out. The master vampire, Aiden, is over 400 hundred years old and he has not been attracted to a woman other than his dead human wife until he's face to face with Krystal. Really, who's buying that one? Of course Krystal is attracted to Aiden; but, she does not view herself as attractive. Krystal grew up in a household with her abusive father and battered mother. Her father beat her physically and psychologically as well. Because her mother did not protect Krystal from her father's insults and assaults, Krystal was driven to escape the destiny her father chose for her and she vows not to be controlled by anyone ever again. With a scholarship in hand, she became a doctor. Kudos to Krystal. She goes to interview for a job where she can have an independent practice. BUT, Aiden kidnaps her and keeps her in a basement suite because he needs an unvaccinated doctor to treat the unvaccinated humans and vampires in a community he created called Penton. Aiden enthralls Krystal repeatedly to control her (gain her cooperation) but she does not flip out about it. Huh? Anyway because as a victim of battery by her father, Krystal is able to sense Aiden's moods so she is able to be his light in times of darkness. Pun totally intended. Any who, a romance ensues between Krystal and Aiden. Of course there's a protagonist.Read more ›
