Editorial Reviews

FROM PRIMORDIAL s A.A. Nemtheanga:
'If I had to sum this album up I would say this is the "death" album. Plain and simple. There isn't exactly a whole concept but many of the themes deal with mortality, how we deal with it. The spiritual structures we place around us to make sense of it. Sex, death, procreation and God. As we get older our relationship to our lives changes, the realization you will not live forever, the grand plan you hoped to uncover never materializes, food for worms and nothing more.

We are animals, beasts and making peace with that beast might be your life's work but more often than not he is never tamed.

Once a wolf always a wolf. We all seek redemption in one way or another, from lies or from truth. Those of us who are godless or faithless often envy the man of faith for his life seems to have an extra purpose, despite the fact that logic, pragmatism, science and realism should crush any sign of faith we still persist in lying to ourselves. Perhaps the alternative is too much to bear. So the themes of religion, mortality and death occur over and over again, along with continuing themes of alienation, martyrdom, sacrifice, violence and retribution. Occasionally, very occasionally a chink of light breaks through.

This is our seventh album, you know what to expect, passion, intensity, commitment and sheer bloody mindedness. Don't expect fantasy or escapism. No remorse, no regret.'

Primordial will release their new longplayer 'Redemption At The Puritan's Hand' on April 23rd/26th, 2011 via Metal Blade Records in Europe!

Their first studio release in 4 years, Primordial returns with a very solid and highly enjoyable album. Pretty much everything you'd expect from one of their releases is on here, solid writing, good lyrics and a very tight performance. However everything that you'd expect is what you get, anyone who's heard any of their past few albums knows pretty much what to expect, and this album doesn't go anyplace the band hasn't already been. Nemtheanga sounds good throughout, and there are a few more screams scattered throughout than their last album, but on a whole the band doesn't break any new ground. They do what they do very, very well, and this is really a fantastically crafted album of dark music. But since I don't feel like they're really doing anything new with what they do, or pushing themselves or the listener, I can't rate this as a 5 star album, simply a solid 4, very good and well done, but it's not a masterpiece or anything to raise the bar. If you've liked their previous albums, you'll enjoy this just as much, if you didn't like them and are wondering if this is worth a second chance, it probably won't change your mind. If you haven't heard any of their music, this a fine place to start as it's an excellent representation of their sound. Either way, it's a very good album and you're mostly likely to enjoy it.

Redemption at the puritans hand imho is primordials best release out of a very impressive catalog that doesn't have a weak release in it. At first i was underwhelmed by this release as it doesn't have the immediate impact of to the nameless dead but after listening to the cd for awhile the songs became ingrained in my mind like i never expected them to. The lyrics, vocals, guitars, drums and atmosphere all come together to create songs that will stay in your head long after there over. Almost every song could be considered exepctional but for me the highlights are lain with the wolf, the mouth of judas and the puritans hand. Imho this is primordial at the best they have ever been. If you liked any of primordials other work then i can't see why to not to like this and if your new to primordial then you have been missing out of one of the most sincere, honest and best bands in the metal world.

On first listen i was expecting something a bit more *progressive*, since Primordial's sound has been evolving at a steady pace as the album's have been made.

There have been new elements injected into the music since *To The Nameless Dead* but nothing too far away from the formula.

But after many listens, the songs are simply great songs with plenty of passion, and they really grow on you over time.

That is definitely a trademark of Primordial's charm!
