Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Meyerowitz is best known as a photographer with brilliant control of color. That skill and his inspired compositions have made him one of our most important contemporary photographers and one of this reviewer's favorites. But this collection of more than 60 portraits of people who are redheads is empty. Though his introductory essay is self-congratulatory regarding the project and its capturing of the way redheads look, Meyerowitz's book looks like an idea born in the euphoria of a sunny Cape Cod day, published because of the artist's high recognition. As a gift to your favorite redhead--fine. As a library acquisition--not recommended.

Redheads, by Meyerowitz, is a tasteful gallery of full-color photos. It includes both sexes, as well as all body types and ages (and all shades of red). There is no text; the focus instead is on the subjects, who show remarkable variety of expression and posture. One of the few complaints I have with the book is the limited photojournalism; nearly all of the photos are composed the same, with the subject(s) centered and posed looking at the camera. Overall, the book is fairly good, and very good if you prefer redheads.

I love how real the people look in these photographs. No effort was made to hide freckles or pale eyelashes. No one is spray tanned. The photographs communicate such character and warmth. This is definately one of my favorite books about redheads.

This is an amazing book the photograph is captivating in all sense of the word. Especially the 3 page fold out of an entire red headed family on the beach.

I knew I needed this book for my own facination with redheads which strangley enough is one of my goals to marry one.

The entire book has some very interesting people from other continents. Such beautiful women and men as well.

this book is a mild plus.

The Library Journal critic David Bryant didn't understand this book at all and didn't seem to try. "Redheads" is a celebration of a specifically unique type of human, redheads, or the sometimes disrespectful word, "gingers". They are a group unto their own; mutants, according to the medical community.

But Bryant blows it in his critique with shoddy reviewing. The redheads in the panoramic foldout of the book were gathered on a nice summer day in Dana Point, California, NOT on Cape Cod. I know because I gathered the subjects, including myself, for the shoot. That blows away his toss-off comment "Meyerowitz's book looks like an idea born in the euphoria of a sunny Cape Cod day, published because of the artist's high recognition."

The book was created by one of the most talented photographers ever in the color scheme stream... and that foldout in "Redheads" ended up as a very large photographic mural in the NY Museum of Modern Art. Myself and 16 other redheads are very proud for participating, and the book is absolutely a work of beauty and wonder of humanity.
