Avante-Garde indeed, August 19, 2003
This review is from: Rediscovering the Russian Avant-Garde 1912-1925 (Audio CD)
This is "modern" art music, much more accessible, perhaps, than the more dissonent works of better known composers - does that mean less creative? - but still very much from the heady, optimistic period of early 20th Century, revolutionary Europe... before Stalin, Hitler, et al lit the firestorm in ernest.
It would be hard to argue that these nearly lost composers will ever challenge Schoenberg, Mahler or Stravinsky... but their works are well played here and have considerable merit. Recommended for those who, like this writer, like to travel in time and recall the brief, artistic flowering of the post-Great War, pre-Holocaust world.
