5.0 out of 5 stars Brian Jacques is Truly Magical!
Mr. Jacques' descriptions of the feasts in his Redwall books are so tantalizing that our ten-year-old son was inspired to request *beets* for dinner. If that's not magical, what is? What's even better is that our boy ate the beets and liked them!

We had the opportunity to meet Brian at a book signing two days ago and it was wonderful. He summarized his...

3.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book by itself
This is a great usable cookbook with a table of contents in the front showing the organization of dishes by season and an index in the back organized by course. It can also be read as a short story featuring characters from the novels. Recipes are presented as different dishes are mentioned in the story. Beautiful full color illustrations accompany the story making it an...

5.0 out of 5 stars Brian Jacques is Truly Magical!, October 6, 2005

He summarized his approach to writing books ("Paint pictures with words!") and entertained the kids with stories of his youth and early days as an author.

Our son has spent hours curled-up with the Redwall Cookbook (signed!) and our plan for the weekend is to purchase a selection of root vegetables (plus some ginger ale and grape juice to make a batch of October Ale) and try some of the recipes ourselves.

Bravo, Mr. Jacques, and thank you for writing such terrific books!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise!, June 19, 2006

I reluctantly bought this for a daughter who loves Redwall books and cooking. The first pleasant surprise came upon opening the book and seeing how visually pleasing it is. It's lovely! The next came when our daughter starting working her way through the book, with the goal of making each recipe. She's about half-way through and each one thus far has been delicious; something our whole family enjoyed. Most cookbooks yield a handful of recipes that are keepers but The Redwall Cookbook is amazingly, consistently good. This is a purchase I'm glad I made.

5.0 out of 5 stars At Last!, December 1, 2005
This review is from: The Redwall Cookbook (Redwall Companion Books) (Mass Market Paperback)
I've been waiting for this cookbook for years - every time I read a Redwall book, I crave comfort food like mad! I tried the Deep'r n' ever turnip an' tater an' beetroot pie this week, and my husband and I quite liked it! It only made one layer of each part in a 9" square pan, though, so if you really want it deep'r n' ever, you'd probably have to double the recipe. I can't wait to try some of the pastry recipes!

5.0 out of 5 stars Kids cookbook with a story, February 19, 2006
This review is from: The Redwall Cookbook (Redwall Companion Books) (Mass Market Paperback)
This paperback book has beautiful illustrations. The table of contents is divided into months which is a great idea. Kids will love the names of the dishes. They are easy to make and taste good too. They all follow the story line.

5.0 out of 5 stars can't wait to cook, January 15, 2006
This review is from: The Redwall Cookbook (Redwall Companion Books) (Mass Market Paperback)
My son likes all of Brian Jacques' books and he likes to watch "Good Eats"(he likes the science behind the cooking). The lure of this book was that it contained many of the recipes alluded to in the redwall books. He also likes that the ingredients are items easily found at home or at the store. He is constantly making "October Ale"!!!!...lol It's delicious!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Grandson's Cookbook, November 9, 2006
This review is from: The Redwall Cookbook (Redwall Companion Books) (Mass Market Paperback)
My Grandson does a lot of the cooking for his family of 11. He mentioned this cookbook as a possible birthday present.
My wife and I bought it for his 13th birthday and he is really enjoying it. And so is the rest of his family - eating eating eating.
Great chef starter!

3.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book by itself, September 30, 2007
This review is from: The Redwall Cookbook (Redwall Companion Books) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a great usable cookbook with a table of contents in the front showing the organization of dishes by season and an index in the back organized by course. It can also be read as a short story featuring characters from the novels. Recipes are presented as different dishes are mentioned in the story. Beautiful full color illustrations accompany the story making it an enjoyable read for both the reader and any young listeners.

The recipes are easy to follow and keyed with a picture of a dibbun when close adult supervision is unnecessary.

The PROBLEM with this book is that it is hugely inauthentic. Of the nearly 40 recipes only 4 have ever made an appearance in one of Jacques' books. Two of these, october ale and strawberry fiz, you certainly don't need a cookbook to make being based on ginger ale or seltzer water. This leaves us with only two authentic dishes deeper'n'ever turnip'n'tater'n'beetroot pie and shrimp'n'hotroot soup. If you are looking for something to tie in to the books and excite your child about cooking this is your book, but purists and people with nostalgia will be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow and an added bonus., December 12, 2009

The recipes in this book, (from what i have tried at least) are all really tasty, and easy to prepare. The story that goes throughout the book is chopped up by the recipes on every page but for a child reading it, they will have fun hearing some of their favorite creatures of Redwall read off ingredients to them. An added bonus that I should have guessed at, but every single recipie in the cook book is vegetarian, aside from one which uses shrimp. It's a great way to get kids, especially fans of the Redwall series, to eat their vegetables.
