The REED WD-5 Wet/Dry Bulb Hygrometer measures relative humidity by comparing readings of wet bulb and dry bulb thermometers using relative humidity tables supplied. Its accuracy is obtained by creating rapid air circulation around the bulbs. It is a non-mecury red spirit filled thermometer. Comes with NIST Calibration Certificate.

The product came in good condition and worked like a charm. Be advised you need air blowing across it and you must allow time for it to stabilize before taking a reading. I used a fan about 6 feet away and took readings on it after 45 minutes at 5 min intervals until it stabilized. That took about 1 hour.
I only had two minor complaints. I would like to have had a larger unit that was easier to read. And the tables provided were set to use degrees centigrade as the primary measurement making it even harder to read since that is a narrower scale. This issue was there mainly because I am getting old and have a hard time seeing small stuff. But it was easy to get around by going to the internet and downloading a picture of a chart and blowing it up.
Thermometers are relatively accurate. They matched our NIST certified thermometer to within 2-F.
Easy to set up and use.
We use two Reed, two electronic "certified" and one dial-and-needle unit to check each other.
Included Relative Humidity Table is INAPPROPRIATE for our area. Table values are strange and may be wrong.
For example, Dry-Bulb 68-F with 9.0-F depression yields 56% RH. The correct RH should have been 59% or, depending on barometric reading (elevation), 58.24% for our area.
1. National Weather Service (NWS) offers RH Tables (online) that account for elevation variations:
We use the table that matches our elevation. You can use Google Earth or USGS Topo map to find your elevation. If you use these tables, please know that the LOWER number in each cell is the RH.
2. NWS also offers a calculator:
Use Reed's Wet-Bulb and Dry-Buld readings with local NWS website barometric reading to get a realistic localized RH value. This calculation helps to independently confirm the NWS chart values.
Electronic Hygrometer, even so-called "Certified" ones are useless and totally wrong for our region (SF Bay Area). They are often 10% off the Dry-Wet and needle-and-dial readings.
