About the Author

Scott Michael has been obsessed with elasmobranchs since the age of twelve, after encountering his first shark in a public aquarium. While still in high school he studied the food habits and abundance of sharks in the Gulf of Mexico, and has since conducted shark and ray research in the Sea of Cortez, Australia, and New Zealand. His endeavors to collect photographs and observe sharks and rays have taken him from Cocoa Island, Costa Rica to New Guinea and several locations in the Caribbean. He has contributed photographs and articles to numerous publications and was recently a scientific consultant for a National Geographic documentary on shark and ray behavior. He is a member of the American Elasmobranch Society, and currently leads dive trips, dubbed "Shark Safaris", which give divers the opportunity to observe and learn more about these fascinating animals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent ID tool! The best category guide yet., July 7, 2004

This review is from: Reef Sharks and Rays of the World: A Guide to Their Identification, Behavior and Ecology (Paperback)
Reef Sharks and Rays by Scott Michael is the most comprehensive and excellent book on this topic one could ever look for! If you are going diving or snorkeling in tropical or subtropical areas, this would have to be the incomparable choice, if you can find it. Be aware that it is out of print and can only be found in specialized stores, where it is expensive.
You will find shark species listed in here that no other guide has covered quite yet. For instance, the "Nervous Shark" is a very interesting species, and this is the only book known that lists it. (To my knowledge, since I own four books on sharks). The section on rays is also decent, as you will find unusual and poorly known species listed along with the common ones. A very pleasing guide despite it's size and trust me, it is well worth the high price that must pe paid!
