5.0 out of 5 stars Unique blending of fantasy, South Seas thrills, and sci-fi, April 17, 2002
This review is from: Reefsong (Mass Market Paperback)
The early paperback originals by Carol are out of print now, but for fantasy lovers they are worth searching out and buying used. A Peace Corps veteran who served in Micronesia, a resident of the Big Island of Hawaii who worked there as a journalist, Carol knows her South Pacific mythology and how to spin a suspenseful story as well. "Reefsong" and "Sorcerous Sea" and "Demon Drums" feature courageous females, bloody battles, mystical religions, deep ocean wonders, and the occasional love interest. Hard to describe, hard to put down after a few chapters. I knew the author briefly, many years ago, before she became a novelist. I can proudly say I am jealous of her achievements. If you want a few hours of escape from your normal, land-locked, fully-human environment, try these books if you can find them. Her work is really different, and not just for women: "Demon Drums" has some tension over torture that was hard for me to stomach. The other titles are less bloody.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, November 5, 1999
This review is from: Reefsong (Mass Market Paperback)
I love all of Carol Severance's books--whatever hapened to her? I read this one several years ago--a nice blend of fantasy (mostly) with a little sci-fi thrown in--a fast-moving, thought-provoking story in a gorgeous other-worldly Pacific-Islandesque setting with a strong, smart heroine at its center. I still pull it out periodically to re-read it. I'm still holding out hope that I might find a new title by her on the shelves one of these days.

This book shows the Hawaiian legends come to life. With a twist of fantasy and the desire for things to keep their living, Carol Severance grabs your attention and then plays on the ends of your nerves. It is a wonderful tale that will grab you and take you away. There are 3 more books in the series and you had better have them because you will not want to wait for them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Use of technology for medical and interplanetary travel, July 24, 1999
By
This review is from: Reefsong (Mass Market Paperback)
The story is one of a young lady becoming a heroine in her eyes and the eyes of her family. People who like science fiction should read this book because it expresses the notion of inter-planatary travel and the influence of medical technology to adapt humans to live on these other new found worlds. Its a great book and can show what may happen if there are strict abotion laws. showing that most likely the author, Carol Severance, could be pro-choice, or pro-abortion. However, this is only one reader's perception.
