Good book for new collectors-basic black & white information., May 15, 2009
By Farquhar P. Parkinfarker "olegeezer" (God's country) - See all my reviews

This book is a collection of black and white reprints of color photos which mostly had been used through the years in various Mead Publishing Company products. As a result, the quality of the reprints range from too light to too dark to be really helpful in getting the details of each machine. However, if a collector is just getting started in the slot machine hobby, it is sometimes difficult to identify a machine that is 75 to 100 years old, and which has been out of the public eye for at least 50 years. I wish I had this book in 1973 when I collected my first machine, and for many years thereafter until I got my education, and experience from the marketplace. On a cost per photo basis, the cover price of the book is reasonable, and the overall quality of the photos is good enough to allow a general identification of a machine by maker and year. Many other books and publications by the publisher of this book are available to fill in the blanks with more detail if the collector is interested. My somewhat low rating of three stars is based on the quality of the photos and the minimal information provided for each machine. However, due to the high cost of limited market appeal publications, "Reel History a Photographic History of Slot Machines" is still a good reference investment. It does well what it is intended to do, and is affordable for those who may have a limited budget.
