5.0 out of 5 stars Organ Jazz never greater than Kynard!, May 15, 2011
This review is from: Reelin With the Feelin & Wa-Tu-Wa-Zui (Audio CD)
Great twofer of 2 fine Kynard releases, "Reelin With The Feelin' "(Charles Kynard organ, Wilton Felder tenor, Joe Pass guitar,Carol Kaye bass, Paul Humphrey Drums) & "Wa-Tu-Wa-Zui" (Charles Kynard organ, Rusty Brant tenor, Virgil Jones trumpet, Melvin Sparks guitar, Jimmy Lewis bass, Idris Muhammad & Bernard Purdie drums) Reelin may be Kynards most well known release, probably is my favorite or up there with "Soul Brotherhood", & "Your Mama Don't Dance" but the reality is Kynard NEVER released a klunker- Reelin has a unique sound partly due to the up-front Fender bass driving by Carol Kaye. Having electric bass always adds a different punch that pedal organists can lack. The one standard on "Wa Tu Wa Zui" where Kynard does a simply killer job is George Harrisons "Something", which may be finest track on the record. Bernard Purdie takes the drum chair and pushes the whole band to tear and Kynard has never played better. This a must hear piece of B-3 heaven, wall shaking or subtlity I find Kynard always keeping my interest with variety.

Beat Goes Public to their credit released this in '94 before any Kynard CDs were put on Cd, BGP has done some other ground breaking re releases the Johnny Lytle sides come to mind. So, since this release Prestige wisely opened their vaults for a great reissue program, (now all going out of print!) so that 7 years later in 2001 due to this BGP release and renewed popularity on the dancefloor they released 2 twofer CDs containing all four of Charles Kynard's Prestige sides,so "The Soul Brotherhood" twofer has "Soul Brotherhood" (Blue Mitchell, Fathead Newman,Grant Green) and "Reelin With the Feelin". Also in 1999 the released Charles Kynard "Legends of Acid Jazz" containing "Afro-Disaic" and "Wa-Tu-Wa-Zui". Bottom line is all these twofers are great, and the later prestige releases will give you these 2 sides on 2 different Cds. All of this stuff is so fine, as are Kynards later early 70's releases for Milestone (released on p-vine) Beat Goes Public has to be given props for bringing back these great sides before anyone else , maybe now with Ace UK's backing they could dive into the sadly neglected but fantastic Argo Cadet catalogue and get some of that un released gold like "Morris Nanton"-Soul Fingers for example or freddy McCoy, or Gene Shaw or Sonny Cox etc etc....
