Reelin' In The Years With Steely Dan

A Listmania! list by Michael King "Mike" (Taunton, MA United States)
(REAL NAME)
The list author says: "Walter Becker (bass) and Donald Fagen (keyboards, vocals) met at Bard College in New York in 1967, and began playing in bands together shortly afterward. In 1970, the pair joined Jay & The Americans' backing band. They stayed with Jay until 1971. They wrote the score for the 1971 movie "You Gotta Walk It Like You Talk It." The soundtrack album was credited to Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. Becker and Fagen moved to New York City with hopes of becoming professional songwriters. They met Gary Katz, who hired them as staff songwriters for ABC/Dunhill in Los Angeles, where Katz had just become a staff producer. Katz suggested that Becker and Fagen form a band as a way to record their songs. Recruiting guitarists Denny Dias and Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, drummer Jim Hodder, and keyboardist/vocalist David Palmer, Becker and Fagen formed Steely Dan in 1972. They released their debut album, "Can't Buy A Thrill," later that year. David Palmer left the band following that album. Jeff Porcaro replaced Jim Hodder on drums, and keyboardist/vocalist Michael McDonald joined the band in time for the 1975 album, "Katy Lied." By that point, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen had stopped performing live, effectively making Steely Dan a studio band. For their next several albums, Becker and Fagen hired different studio musicians to play on their albums. After the album "Gaucho" was released in 1980, Becker and Fagen had a parting of the ways. Donald Fagen's album "Kamakiriad" (1993) was produced by Walter Becker. The album was promoted by the first Steely Dan tour in nearly twenty years. In 1995, Steely Dan mounted another successful reunion tour, and released "Alive In America." Becker and Fagen released the Steely Dan album "Two Against Nature" in 2000. It won the Grammy Award for Best Album Of The Year. Steely Dan was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001. The Steely Dan album "Everything Must Go" was released in 2003."
