Editorial Reviews

From Jazziz

The well-calibrated cavorting that eddie henderson does on Yellin's disc is multiplied on his own Reemergence (Sharp Nine). As an improvisor, Henderson has always been a mix of Miles Davis and Freddie Hubbard, able to convey mystery, while still throwing punches with his horn. Milking Billy Drummond's skills at effecting several rhythms simultaneously, Henderson turns his "Dreams" into a bit of an homage to the mid-'60s Davis quintet. Kevin Hays and Joe Locke do some creative roaming, and bassist Ed Howard puts tension into the piece with repeated flutters. Producer Todd Barkan gets a great sound on Henderson for this label debut. When muted, as he is on the gentle boogaloo of "Summertime" and the ultra-blue "Saturn's Child," there's a crispness that inspires the energy level. With an open horn, as on Woody Shaw's "Sweet Love of Mine," say, or on Wayne Shorter's "This Is for Albert," his playing teems with even more precision. And his chops are impeccable; he can pull off any line he dreams up. The Gershwin suite at the center of Reemergence blends a law-abiding mainstream demeanor with just enough odd, subtle touches to make things stimulating. It's likely you've never heard "Summertime" driven by the tempo Drummond chooses to effect. And after a slightly melodramatic open, "It Ain't Necessarily So" shimmies with street-corner savvy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Henderson re-emerges with fine hard-bop session, November 7, 2003

This review is from: Reemergence (Audio CD)
Trumpeter Henderson is joined by vibraphonist Joe Locke, pianist Kevin Hays, bassist Ed Howard and drummer Billy Drummond to perform two originals, a selection each by Woody Shaw, Wayne Shorter and Locke, plus four Gershwin tunes. Sensitive and moving renditions by a quintet of seasoned players who know how to listen to each other as well as play at an advanced level.
