This review is from: Referee's Screen (Traveller: The New Era) (Paperback)
Like some other excellent RPGs of the Nineties -- such as Alternity -- TNE [Traveller New Era] is a finely balanced blend of great role-playing background with great math-based foreground. Like Alternity, TNE is based on a unifying single challenge resolution method using minimal task-and-success die roles for real-world-like Easy, Average, Difficult, Formidable to Impossible [very improbable] task-and-success results. Most of TNE is linked to this sliding step-ladder scale -- So, most of TNE game dynamics can be easily presented via a single compact six-sided fold-out chart -- that is the "Referee's Screen" under review. Also, due to the unified nature of TNE, it is presented as a whole do-able game via its single handbook by name ["Traveller New Era"]. Other TNE resources are interesting to expand upon the main TNE handbook -- as are resources from other versions of Traveller to support TNE -- which I prefer both in its particular historical background and in its superior numerical foreground. For those to whom "order" appeals, there is the "Regency" [a mere 1,000 world survival of the 11,000 plus "Third Imperium"]. For those to whom "chaos" appeals, there is the "Wilds" beyond the "Regency" -- such as the "Star Vikings" of the "Reformation Coalition". For those to whom superior fine-tuned [but EASY] game dynamics appeal -- for any version of Traveller -- there is this "Referee's Screen" +++
