5.0 out of 5 stars Best NRSV Bible!, March 5, 2009
By
This review is from: NRSV Reference with Apocrypha Black French Morocco NR563XA (Leather Bound)
If you like the NRSV translation (which does use inclusive language) then you will like this Bible. I have a NRSV Study Bible, a compact NRSV, but this one will become my regular use Bible. It is the reference edition which is important, so you can look up similar verses and the book name and verse number that is being quoted in the verse you are reading. These reference numbers are put in the middle of the page and divides the two groups of verses on each page. I was not sure I would like that at first, but I like it now, it is very convenient. This Bible is a little wider than the text edition (no references) so that the text does not seem to squished up on the page. This Bible has 15 pages of very good maps. The Bible came in perfect condition and is very well made. This is the nicest Bible I own, and I own many. The french morocco leather is very thick and sturdy. The Bible will lay open flat, but is still thick enough, so when you hold it in one hand and read from (it like at a bible study class, etc), it does not flop like a limp rag (making it hard to read). The Bible paper is very nice, it is off white and is thick enough to keep bleed through to a minimum. The font is about 9 (swift), which dispite the size, is very easy to read. The Bible comes with two ribbon markers. This Bible is very well made and is the type you buy to last a life time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great ~ except..., December 29, 2007

I love this version. I bought it because I wanted a Morocco Leather Bible with Apocrypha for reference, but on delving into the NRSV text have decided to replace the ESV with NRSV for daily reading.

The item itself is wonderful and I love the off-white paper stock and the silk ribbons and quality binding... BUT ... what is it with Amazon and high-end Bibles? They seem to send out damaged or poor quality Bibles more often than not. I have bought MANY leather Bibles from Amazon and this copy should be returned -- the gold edging has all but brushed away at the top of the Bible. However, I enjoy the text so much I expect the gilding to wear away anyhow.

PLEASE AMAZON .... inspect your more expensive stock before shipping it so you can replace without inconveniencing your loyal customers.

Not a bargain priced Bible, to be sure, but certainly the very best of the Cambridge standards. Outstanding printing, the very best binding quality; elegant and highly readable. Without question, the top-of-the-line NRSV available.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful edition, a true joy to read and hold!, May 23, 2011

I am a Catholic who has been in search of a high quality Bible, such as a Cambridge, for quite some time. I have never been happy with the offerings of the Catholic Bible publishing houses, and have always wanted a Cambridge quality Bible. I ordered this version after much research, as, to the best of my knowledge, the NRSV is the same text whether officially labeled "Catholic" or not. In fact, the Apocrypha here holds a few more books, i.e, 3 and 4 Maccabees, and Psalm 151, that the standard Catholic Canon would not. (Other than the order of the books, nothing is really different here).

As far as the quality of this product, it has surpassed my expectations. It is beautifully made. A true joy to even open. Yes, the actually text in the middle is the most important thing, but having God's Word in such a beautifully bound edition makes reading even more enjoyable. What can I say that others have not? The leather is gorgeous, the binding superb, the paper is PERFECT, with very, very little to no bleed though, and the text font and size are ideal for my aging eyes. 8-) The maps, references and other additions are very nice as well.

Lastly, I was a bit skeptical about the NRSV, as I normally do my daily reading from either the RSV-CE, or the Douay Rheims. I have been reading the version on line for some time, and now with the physical Bible, even more so. The translation is growing on me. It flows very, very nicely. I thought the inclusive language would bother me, but I'm finding that the notes always note where things are stated differently in other translations, and my familiarity with the texts take away much of that worry. The NRSV is fast becoming my favorite translation, for a number of reasons!
