Interesting gateway book, January 26, 2010
This review is from: Reflecting Culture: The Evolution of American Comic Book Super Heroes: Exhibition Catalog (Paperback)
I've heard complaints about this book as being too short and lacking information. What the buyer should understand about this book is that it is a companion piece to a museum exhibit that existed a couple years ago. It is meant to plug the exhibit and give the reader an idea of what it was about. Like the exhibit itself, this book is all pictures and few words. Readers are meant to view the pictures within the contexts (established by the chapter headings), and draw their own conclusions about how each piece exemplifies the context in which it is included.
I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to do research on comic books and how they have influenced or been influenced by American culture. While the book itself does not provide a lot of information on its own, it does provide many names and titles (i.e. artists, documentaries, etc) that can provide further data on the subject. Also, hard-core comic fans will recognize favorite images and possibly view them in a new light. This is why I have called it a "gateway" book: it opens the door to further avenues of research for personal or professional exploration.
