2.0 out of 5 stars Lacking..., September 25, 2011

This review is from: On Reflection (Audio CD)
The selections of jigs/hornpipes (instrumentals) were not stellar. For most of them, when the song started I thought 'this is almost catchy' but after about a minute of listening to it I had to skip the track. 3/2 Hornpipes was about the only one I came close to liking.

Whittingham Fair, the story more usually found as Scarborough Fair, was kind of nice. But the tune was the same throughout the entire thing and it gets old about 2 minutes through. Nancy Kerr's voice (I assume) isn't bad but it's nowhere as near as nice as Eliza Carthy's.

Bushes & Briars (Carthy a cappella) was kind of pretty. I however prefer the version by Susan McKeown, this one was a little flat.

The Keek In The Creel, sung by both, was ok, but the voices seemed a bit unsteady.

Dance To Your Daddy / The Flaming Drones: I liked this one. I think it's sung by Kerr, with male background vocals, and it's somewhat catchy.

Port 'n' Brandy has pretty vocals (Kerr), and it's not bad, but I don't love it.

I Know My Love, sung by both, is rather fun. However, it cannot top the version by The Chieftains and the Corrs (in my opinion).

Growing (The Trees They Do Grow High Carthy a cappella), a familiar song for me, and I like other versions better (by Pentangle and Altan for example).

Bonny Light Horseman/Michael Turner's Waltz - the reason I got this CD! I first found the song on Troubadours Of British Folk: Vol. 3 { Various Artists }. The first half is the vocal-story part, the harmony is great and the song is pretty. The waltz is pretty good, but it continues on for forever... well, the last 3:30. Too long, I think, but that's ok.

So in the end, the last track is the only reason to get the CD. The instruments are screechy and rather boring, the vocal pieces are mostly ok but nothing special. I love Carthy's voice, and Kerr's is also pretty especially in the last track, but I felt the album was lacking and do not recommend it.
