Editorial Reviews

Review

This international recording star was born and raised on Long Island, New York, and is often dubbed one of the most beautiful women in the world by the international media. She is frequently identified as a mix of Karen Carpenter s voice and a young Stevie Nicks, for her flowing skirts, but her ethereal voice and lyrics are all her own. As a front woman for the band Blackmore s Night, she also plays 7 medieval instruments on stage, lending to the excitement and mysticism of the music of her group. Candice Night sang background for Deep Purple in 1993; and on Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow CD Stranger in Us All, she co-wrote four songs. She received a gold record in Japan for her co-writing efforts and one of her songs, Black Masquerade, was chosen as Best Song Of The Year in 1995. Her song Ariel won accolades in Europe and charted at # 2, as well as being the official German soccer song, and Black Masquerade was # 1 in Japan.

She then wrote lyrics for the songs for the 1st Blackmore's Night album, Shadow of the Moon which earned her a 2nd gold record in 1997. Since then, she has been awarded gold records and other awards for her writing and performances in Blackmore's Night as well as for Rainbow, and has charted consecutively with each CD. The Blackmore's Night CD Shadow Of The Moon immediately went gold in Japan and stayed high in the European charts for 16 weeks. Two years later, Under A Violet Moon was released and won the vocal album of the year award in USA. In 2003, Fires at Midnight won the NAV Best Vocal Album awards, went gold in Europe and they also won video music awards. In 2003, Ghost Of A Rose was gold in Europe and won vocal album of the Year again in USA. Their DVD Castles And Dreams was picked up by PBS in the USA and aired on TV throughout America. It went gold in Germany shortly after release. In 2006, The Village Lanterne entered the charts in Germany and Japan, riding high for several months. --Phantasm Imports

3.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully crafted contemporary music October 17, 2011
Format:Audio CD
By now, pretty much everyone knows that Candice Night is the amazing vocalist of Blackmore's Night and she possesses one of the finest, most expressive voices in the world. Together with Ritchie Blackmore's guitars, they create truly heartfelt and powerful songs.

Reflections is Night's first solo album. At only 38 minutes, all the songs were written by her, so it's a real solo effort in this sense. Her husband Ritchie Blackmore was not involved in the songs because he, too, encouraged her to make her own statement. Naturally, the album is quite a departure from the sound of Blackmore's Night. The songs on Reflections are more modern sounding with an easily noticeable contemporary slant. Besides the sizzling folk-inspired synth melodies of the aching ballad "For You" and Night's trademark 'storytelling' lyricism of "Robin Red Breast," the album develops a more modern sound and direction. Even these two songs are very vocal-driven, emphasizing her lighter-than-air vocals with perfect clarity and harrowing echo. Her breathy, lambent voice set against a melting piano motif and ethereal acoustic guitars on "Call It Love" suggests Candice Night would be played on the radio in a perfect world. She sings in a totally crystalline tone with sheer emotion and delicacy over sparse arrangements of percussion and some electronic beats. Her vocals are often treated with an overlay of reverb to give the songs deep space and resonance. The ending of "Wind Is Calling (Hush the Wind)" and effect-laden vocalization of "Dangerous Smile" are styles she could never explore in Blackmore's Night, and while I'm not too keen on hearing her in such a heavily electronic sound environment, I realize this is what solo albums and side projects are for.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent first solo November 19, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I love Blackmore's Night but was a little hesitant at first to buy this CD from their lead singer. I shouldn't have.

Of the ten tracks there are only two I could do without, Dangerous Smile and Call It Love. Yet they might end up being the most popular on the CD.

The first four tracks are very strong, the third being Black Roses and the fourth being Now and Then. This is a song Blackmore's Night recorded in 1999 on their 2nd CD, Under a Violet Moon. Here, Candice has added another verse, and with different vocal phrasing I actually like this new version better.

The CD finishes strong with thoughtful lyrics throughout as well as catchy melodies that, although different from the medieval style of Blackmore's Night, isn't generally that far removed, other than the two songs I don't care for. But who ever puts out a CD with no weak tracks?

Give this CD a few listens and I guarantee it will grow on you. It will get in your head and you will find yourself singing bits and pieces of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly beautiful CD October 27, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Candice Night's new solo CD "Reflections" is an incredible collaboration of wonderful melodic tunes driven by one of the best female voices of our time. Candice releases her own CD after over a decade of recording #1 selling CD's as part of Blackmore's Night. None of her fans from Blackmores Night will be disappointed. Her lyrics are all inspiring and her vocals are as angelic as ever. For the first time listeners of any of Candice Night's work, you will be motivated by this moving music. From the soft sounds of "For You", "Black Roses", and "Call it Love" to the upbeat sounds of "Gone, Gone, Gone" and "Dangerous Smile" to her reflections of nature in "Robin Red Breast" and "Hush the Wind", the listener will not be disappointed. My husband and I are loving our candlelit dinners listening to this incredible CD. Definitely 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars The RajMan Review October 23, 2011
Format:Audio CD
The Blackmore's Night vocalist takes a break from medieval-inspired music and steps out on her own with a spritely collection of ten ballads and rockers that deserves to be on the top of the pop charts.

Candice Night is in the league of great female vocalists such as Karen Carpenter, Ann and Nancy Wilson, Alanis Morissette, and Susan Boyle, and she is easily the best female singer-songwriter of the last decade.

My favorite songs are the slower tempo ones that really bring out the subtle beauty of Night's voice, including "Wind Is Calling (Hush the Wind)," "Black Roses," "Now and Then," "For You," "Call It Love," and "Robin Red Breast."

"Wind Is Calling (Hush the Wind)" is an engaging, infectious pop-rock single. "Now and Then" has a great pop ballad middle section, with a very New Age, almost hymn-like opening and closing, especially with the quiet crescendo of voices at the end. "Robin Red Breast" is a stunningly beautiful song with a striking, resonant melody.

If you're looking for a solid collection of pop-rock songs with a great female voice to back them up, this should be on the top of your list.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid first solo effort April 7, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I give this CD four and a half stars. Like the Blackmore's Night albums, I like every song on this album. However, this is not a Blackmore's Night album. It has a more pop music sound, but is far more original than most of today's music. Candice's great voice is well presented. The album also features violin, which give it a distinctive sound. I particularly like 'Gone Gone gone', 'Black Roses', 'Dangerous Smile', and 'Alone With Fate'. The only problem with the album is that there are only ten songs. I would have liked more.

Candace Night doesn't have incredible vocal range, but what she lacks in range, she makes up in heartfelt expression and great taste in songs.
