This is a nice laid back second to last recording by Frank Morgan.With the capable Ronnie Mathews on piano,Essiet Essiet on bass,and Billy Hart on drums Morgan has a mellow approach to to the session with standards by Monk,Miles and chestnuts like "Crazy He Calls Me" and "Out Of Nowhere".No fire here but the playing has subtle changes that indicate no diminution of his skills.I met Frank Morgan (who had a great set that night with the late great Hitlon Ruiz).The man couldn't have been more humble and pleasant to talk to after the gig.Really nice guy.After a30 year hiatus do to drug and prison issues he came back all th master he was in the 50's when issues overtook him.I am glad folks appreciated him and he was appreciative at a second chance I am sure.Thanks to great labels like High Note we got a wonderful second chance with Morgan who was able to record for a decade and a half before his recent death.This may not be a fire breather but it wasn't supposed to be.It's a great wind the evening down CD of familiar tunes and excellent musicianship.Whoever created the tag below "weather channel music" misses the point entirely.
