Book Description

December 1, 2010
Reflections of a Loving Partner is the intimate story of two devoted partners confronting the challenges of a terminal diagnosis. Author C. Andrew Martin's world was shattered when his life partner, Gil, was diagnosed with AIDS. This eloquent memoir shares their love story, unveiling the burdens and the joys of the caregiving journey. Andrew chose to become Gil's caregiver. To prepare for what lay ahead, Andrew enrolled in hospice volunteer training, learning lessons to guide him through the medical, emotional, spiritual, and legal hazards of caregiving. Now a registered nurse and leader in the field of hospice and palliative care, Andrew has turned his personal experience into his life's work, sharing with others the valuable lessons he learned. Andrew shows us that when we are open to its possibilities, the loving and selfless act of being a caregiver for someone who is at the end of life can teach us just as much about living as about dying.

A unique and extraordinary book for family members, caregivers or anyone assisting the terminally ill, and in fact, a book best read well in advance of need. I plan to make sure my husband, children and siblings all read Reflections of a Loving Partner: Caregiving at the End of Life as soon as possible.

Make the journey into the Valley of Death accompanied by a masterful guide who has been there and back at the side of his dying partner. Andrew Martin teaches us how to understand, listen to and support the dying by graciously opening his life story to our scrutiny, sharing his learning process as a hospice volunteer and intimate details of his evolution as a loving caregiver following his partner's terminal diagnosis. Written in accessible language, for individuals searching for ways to be of assistance to family and friends who have been diagnosed with terminal illness, also ideal for those who want to serve as hospice volunteers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poignant and useful book June 6, 2011

Format:Paperback
I read this book while taking care of my sister, who was at home, dying of cancer. This was my second experience with family end-of-life caretaking and hospice, but each was unique. In reading "Reflections of a Loving Partner" while enduring my sister's passing, my emotions and practical needs during this time were both supported. The lessons of the book are applicable to many situations. I particularly like the way Andrew and Gil's story is juxtaposed with Andrew's hospice training. I gave my original copy of the book to one of the hospice care nurses, and bought a second copy which I intend to donate to my local library -- a true testimony to the value and thoughtfulness of this book!

Andrew Martin's book about caring for his partner Gil is well worth the read. What was most interesting and surprising was the back drop of the hospice volunteer training program that set the stage for many important conversations between Andrew and Gil. Having been a Hospice Volunteer Manager for many years, and having created a similar training, I started reading those sections with fear and trepidation. I was relieved to read that there was meaningful exchange between Andrew and Gil that may not have happened without the training topics that gave permission for those rare discussions. I found myself totally caught up in the suspense of how Gil's illness progressed and how Andrew made sense of it before and after Gil's death. I recommend this book to all hospice staff, volunteers and their supervisors. Being a fan of rainbows and having been witness to other tales impacted by a recurring time on the clock - I was easily caught up in this love story. Andrew is the keeper of the soul of this special relationship and I am know changed by the knowledge of it.
