Joseph Raffael has taken what some would consider the highly radical step of dating to paint beautiful pictures at a time when beauty is much out of favor in the art world. Long one of contemporary art's most highly regarded painters, the 64-year-old American-born artist painstakingly creates each painting based on a photograph. Working on a very large scale -- using either watercolor, oil, or acrylic -- he transforms intensely observed details of nature into color-drenched, deeply felt works of art.
