5.0 out of 5 stars Keeps the Garage cooler in the summer, July 21, 2008
This review is from: Reflectix BP24050 24-Inch-by-50-Foot Bubble Pack Insulation (Tools & Home Improvement)
I live in Arizona and saw this product featured during a This Old House episode. The product is very easy to install, and minimizes the heat radiating off the garage door during the day. The insulation also keeps the garage warmer in the winter. Overall, this is a great product. Use double sided carpet tape for garage door installation. A little tape goes a long way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Paid for itself in one month, March 14, 2010

This review is from: Reflectix BP24050 24-Inch-by-50-Foot Bubble Pack Insulation (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought this to insulate my garage and reduce heating costs. My garage is directly below my kids' bedrooms and I my electric bill suffered from trying to keep those rooms warm in the winter. I installed the Reflectix Bubble Pack Insulation (and started using a space heater in my garage) and in one month my electric bill was reduced by about $50.

The width of the roll was perfect to fit in the sections of my garage door. I just needed to cut the appropriate length for each section. I used a spray adhesive to affix it and completed two doors in less than an hour.

As a bonus, this purchase earned me a tax credit for 2009. The certificate is available on the Reflectix website.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lot easier than expected, February 9, 2011

This review is from: Reflectix BP24050 24-Inch-by-50-Foot Bubble Pack Insulation (Tools & Home Improvement)
So like others, I had this idea to insulate the garage doors with this product. It's really easy.

The first thing upon receiving the order was that it was going to be too wide of a strip for the garage door. Like most garage doors I've seen in the past few weeks, however, it's the perfect size. The reason is that my garage door also has a curved pocket on the top and bottom. It's probably about 18-20" of door, and another 4-6" extra that will fit into the U like pocket at the top and the bottom. This allowed me to push the material in and keep it taut so that it won't fall out. So, this is the perfect width of product, you just need to cut the length of the product to the width of your garage door panels.

Like others, I did use double sided carpet tape, although I did so because everyone else did. I don't think that is really necessary, if you have the U shaped pockets at the edges. There's no way it moves and so it did very little. The garage door now moves a bit slower, not much -- it's really not that heavy --- probably adds 20 lbs to the garage door. Also most garage doors have an adjustment to deal with tension. I haven't run into that yet.

The material gives me an R3 on the garage door, according to the package. Alumninum R value according to one website is less than 1. Walls are R15/R19ish. So, R3 is better, but not much, but I think it's better quality will be keeping out radiant heat (not measured by R value) -- which is more summer-like when the sun is baking the garage door. At least that's what neighbors have seen using similar products. Our garages face the sun in Texas.

Lastly, as for quantity, it took about 1.75 packages of this to cover a double garage door.

5.0 out of 5 stars **WOW** Wish I'd Got It 11 Years Ago!, October 1, 2010

What an awesome product! I wish I had got this a long time ago, bought house new 11 yrs ago. Huge notable difference in temp in garage and house, g door is 16 footer double car garage. I am looking forward to seeing how much it will save me this winter. If you add inch or two larger it will stay in place as you scrunch it in place just like you would aluminum foil for a sandwich. It is basically aluminum foil on both sides of a bubble wrap. I works amazingly and I may even double install it on the door for double insulating. It is lightweight and adds insignificant amount of weight to door so its not going to wear out you garage opener motor in two months. I am going to tape it though with foil tape because quite a bit gets transferred through the edges of panels so I am going to tape edges of door panels to the foil for as much blocking of transfer as I can get out of it. Don't let the low R value fool you, it is significant heat and cold blocking going on with this product!UPDATE 11/18/10 WOW!!!!!!!! MY ELECTRIC BILL WAS RUNNING AROUND $120 AND THE LATEST ONE AFTER INSULATING GARAGE WAS $81.00 INCREDIBLE!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Works Well and wished I'd done this sooner!, June 8, 2011
This review is from: Reflectix BP24050 24-Inch-by-50-Foot Bubble Pack Insulation (Tools & Home Improvement)
I'd been researching this foil insulation idea for a couple of years when I finally decided to pick some up from the local Home Depot and give it a shot. For right around $75 including 7% Florida tax I had used just under the three rolls I'd brought home. The installation took me right around an hour to cut each piece to size and tuck it in the panel squares. Intially I used a Sharpie marker but two ran dry so I turned to a simple ball point ink pen which was the best afterall. The ink pen makes a sharper line to cut by. I tried using a razor knife but it was not easy to cut a straight line. My old pair of sharpened scissors made it a lot easier. I did the install at night as it was cooler then. I had only bought two rolls the first day thinking that might be all I'd need. It turned out to be a good idea as I was able to make temperature comparisons on a panel without the foil installed versus a panel with the foil installed. You can see the 22 degree difference in the pictures I uploaded here. I could tell a huge difference the next morning when I walked out into the garage. It was noticeably more comfortable. Usually at around 10:30 AM in the morning the Eastern rising sun really heats up the garage door and radiates the heat inward. A friend came over the next night after telling him about it. Alfred decided he wanted to do the same thing to his garage. So off we went back to Home Depot. We ended up buying some contractor grade adhesive to apply to the garage door panels to make the foil stick tight and closer to the metal. I'm not sure if it made any difference in the efficiency but at least now no one will look at say, 'Hey, it looks like those foils pieces are falling out'. Not that they would have as they were cut to fit and pressed in tight without using any adhesive. Final note. If you aren't convinced now, then, you never will be. Just do it. I'm still wondering if it will make any difference in my electrical bill. Not much I'm sure but I've got my mind set on installing this wonderful foil product underneath my roof. The Florida sun is unbearable during the summer here in Tampa.

I bought this for insulating 54x22 panels in garage doors. All I had to do was cut into 54" pieces and it fit and works perfectly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Reflectix Insulation for garage door, September 10, 2010

This review is from: Reflectix BP24050 24-Inch-by-50-Foot Bubble Pack Insulation (Tools & Home Improvement)
It was very very easy to install the Reflectix BP24050 insulation on my garage doors (roll-up aluminum). It practically holds itself in place though I did use foil tape on the edges to make sure it would stay and to maintain an air pocket. It looks neat and clean. Unfortunately I can't say it made a huge difference, but It did seem to keep some of the heat out. This summer was extremely hot, so I can't gauge it well. I'm still hopeful that some of the heat will stay in this winter too. I'll find out soon.
