Master of solo guitar, June 17, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Reflexões: Reflections (Audio CD)
Paulinho Nogueira is one of the greatest interpreters of the songs of Jobim, and Bossa Nova in Brazil. Now making his debut at Malandro Records. All the songs have been previously recorded, but the CD has new interpretations by the artist. It's a compilation of his most representative performances. I specially like the interpretation of Desafinado. It's a must have for lovers of Brazilian music, Bossa Nova, and solo guitar!

What a Magnificent Guitarist !!!!!!!, November 7, 2002
This review is from: Reflexões: Reflections (Audio CD)
What could it be said about Paulinho that hasn't been said before? Paulinho Nogueira has been playing acoustic guitar for more than half a century ( easier said than done )and his command of the instrument with superb techniques is more than evident in this recording. From Samba to Barroque, you name it, he plays it. I've heard other guitarists played songs like; Ária na 4a Corda (included in this album)in multiple recording or accompanied by other players, and they don't even come near to Paulinho's renditions. I could spend long paragraphs praising both, Paulinho and this album, but you might not agree until you'd get the album. If you love guitar / acoustic guitar / art, buy this album, you will love it too.

Eminently Relaxing, December 17, 2005
This review is from: Reflexões: Reflections (Audio CD)
Its been about five years since I bought this CD, and I'll have to admit that in the interim, Paulinho Nogueira's Reflections sort of disappeared from my musical radar screen. But recently I decided to play all my CDs in alphabetical order so that I could make a decision on whether or not a particular recording merited a permanent place in my CD cabinets. A fresh ear on Reflections proved that my original instincts were sound. Not only did I decide to keep it, but I decided that I should try to hear it more often.
I was unfamiliar with Nogueira's work before this CD was recommended to me. I already enjoyed Bonfa, Jobim, Gilberto, and Gismonti so I had few qualms about taking a chance with Nogueira.
My first reaction to hearing Reflections was that it is OK, but also that nothing really spoke to me, hence its years on the shelf with only an occasional listen. But when I recently listened with "new ears", I found Reflections to be an eminently listenable and relaxing CD that is just perfect for the office or for times when I am in a mellow and pensive mood.
I knock one star off only because there is nothing that really stands out. But then, I also found nothing that was obnoxious. I like the whole CD, most particularly some of the tunes with which I was already very familiar like Manha de Carnival and Desafinado. If you are a fan of the Bossa Nova style and are not yet familiar with Paulinho Nogueira, then I highly recommend that you become acquainted with him by acquiring Reflections.
