5.0 out of 5 stars Very informative, but Kindle version, not so good., January 23, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
As a first time young mom, I was very disappointed to find out that there was something wrong with my baby boy. He will, spit-up (not that much), cry for hours and requested food constantly (something like every hour or so). After taking him finally to a pediatric gastroenterologist and doing some tests he was diagnosed with silent reflux. I found this book to be very informative and in fact answered most of my doubts about the disease. The chapter were all the different types of treatments are explained is excellent. Also, the book confirmed my concerns about "Reglan", a drug given to my baby by his Ped., but that has a long list of side effects. It made me fell better about my decision to take my baby off the drug for good. On the other hand, my only disappointment with this book, was that the Kindle version is not that good. Every chapter it supposed to contain short comments from parents and from the author about a particular subject. However, in the Kindle version you could hardly read the comments because of the very small font in the box, but also, most of them were cut in half because of the eFormat. If they change this, the book will be a perfect read for Kindle owners.

5.0 out of 5 stars useful guide for parents of reflux babies, January 30, 2009
This review is from: Reflux 101: A Parent's Guide to Gastroesophageal Reflux (Paperback)
Well written and very easy to follow. Just as the name suggests, this book is like a basic educational course on infant acid reflux.

Jan Gambino, who is a reflux-mom and educator herself has taken the readers step by step through home treatments/therapies for reflux babies to basic science behind reflux and how to prepare yourself before going to a pediatrician and/or a specialist. Even if you don't have a whole lot of background in reflux-science, you will feel better equipped to deal with your child's reflux when you reead this book.

If you are looking for medical details such as dosage of reflux medicines, the book does not contain such specific solutions for acid reflux but it certainly tells you how and where to look for solutions especially when your child has severe reflux and/or feeding complications rising from it.

The best thing about the book is that it describes the emotional aspects of parenting a reflux baby very well. All of us who are parenting a reflux child or who have done it, will identify with at least one of the small story-columns in the book. You will feel much better when you know that you are not alone in all this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something for everyone, author communicated personally with me, January 17, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Reflux 101: A Parent's Guide to Gastroesophageal Reflux (Paperback)
Reflux 101 provided more than I expected. As the parent of a 9 year old severely disabled child who has had reflux from day one, I did not expect to find much in the book that I didn't know already. Most books are oriented toward infants and offer sparse information for those in our situation. In a desperate frenzy one night, I downloaded the book, read it, found a significant clue to my daughter's reflux complication, emailed the author in the wee hours of the morning, received a response, had a few more exchanges with her and we were on our way to a solid solution within hours. Ms. Gambino writes with a compassionate and knowledgeable approach- something most medically oriented books cannot offer. If you have a child who has suffered with reflux, you will know how reassuring this can be. She gave solid information in addition to encouragement and sincere empathy. Clearly this kind of support is way more than just a repository of facts and statistics. A huge "thank you" to Ms. Gambino and an honest recommend for the book from me.

Ms. Gambino has brought together her experience, education, compassion along with her hard work in order to create a must have book for mommies needing guidance about refluxing children. Her understanding of children with GER and GERD is what makes her book so important to read. All mommies and daddies could benefit in applying Ms Gambino's insight and knowledge!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for parents of babies and kids with reflux., June 23, 2009
This review is from: Reflux 101: A Parent's Guide to Gastroesophageal Reflux (Paperback)
This book is extremely well written with a lot of information yet in an easy to read format. When I first read that medical advice was not given, I was concerned that it would not have very much detail. Much to my surprise, there is a lot of detail and explanation. You will read about symptoms, diagnosis, medications, medical tests, etc. In between all of the specifics are side bar stories, anecdotes and real life info from parents who have lived through children with reflux.

My own three kids had reflux. With my first I felt so lost and had to figure out her reflux on my own. By number 2 & 3 I felt more knowledgeable but yet they were different than my first. I could've used this book with all three and learned something new from it with each child.

I've never read a more comprehensive, useful yet easy to read book on reflux in children. I could not recommend this book more highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE guide for parents of infants and children with GERD, June 18, 2009
This review is from: Reflux 101: A Parent's Guide to Gastroesophageal Reflux (Paperback)
Having been a parent of a preemie with reflux and a professional in the preemie community, I know all too well how this highly misunderstood issue can not only stress the baby but also stress out the entire family. This no-nonsense guide is the bible for helping parents (preemie and non-preemie) through diagnosis, treatment options and early life strategies from infancy through childhood. There are tips and real-life quotes from Moms who have "been there" sprinkled throughout the book, much like having friends right by your side. And this book is informative without being text-book which is unique and refreshing. Definitely a must-have for parents, a thoughtful gift for family and friends who don't "get it."

5.0 out of 5 stars reflux babies..., June 9, 2009

This review is from: Reflux 101: A Parent's Guide to Gastroesophageal Reflux (Paperback)
Looking after a reflux baby can be a very lonely, demoralising experience. Through a mixture of Jan's own experience and the stories she has so respectfully relayed from other mothers, this book helps you understand that although each family's situation is unique there are common difficulties that we all go through and you are not alone. It also gives real insight to all those family and friends that say " oh s/he will just outgrow it and s/he looks so well " to actually understand what the real magnitude of the difficulties you are going through every day. In fact it does it so well that we have bought a few copies that we give to our friends when they ask 'how are you doing' so they can understand why we are more concerned about counting cornflakes than working out when we can next host a dinner party.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Easy Educational Read!, February 24, 2009

This review is from: Reflux 101: A Parent's Guide to Gastroesophageal Reflux (Paperback)
As a mother of two reflux babies, this book describes the ups and downs accurately. I love that this book is a quick and easy read with real life experiences from other people than the author. The book isn't just about a professional's opinion of what reflux should be like, but rather from another reflux mom. While my two children aren't typical reflux children---this book tells the average person what to look out for and some easy home remedies to try to help get you through the roller coaster known as GERD. I highly recommend this book as a book for expecting parents and the parents of children that are fussy. If for no other reason, it's just a good informative book that someone in their life will be impacted by in some way, shape, or form. 5 stars!
