Cochrane's book provides a needed background to the Reformed movement during the Reformation. It is not a history. It gives insight into Reformed thinking by publishing the confessions of the period. A must for Reformed and Presbyterian pastors and scholars

This book will likely be of interest to students of the Reformation, whether studied from the theological or historical angle. The confessions included (chronologically) trace a clear arc not only of the ways in which the Reformers say "No" to certain points of Catholic doctrine and practice, but also, very importantly, how they saw and responded to a need to go beyond merely saying "no." This book might be regarded like an overview of the development of Reformed theology. Many of these confessions are obscure and many are hard to find elsewhere. This is a reprint of a book that had gone out of print. It is a very valuable resource, and a very good resource for an adult Christian education class, especially for Christians who trace their denomination back to the Reformers. I'm tempted to say that every church belonging to a Reformed denomination should probably have a copy of this book in their church library.
