Editorial Reviews

Scottish melodic hard rockers Cry Havoc have their highly regarded 'Fuel That Feeds The Fire' debut album reissued in expanded, repackaged and remastered form as 'Refuel'. Featuring a bonus second disc containing six live tracks, now is the time to pick up on a fantastic album that won many converts to the cause on it's original, limited release. Think Dokken & Blue Murder and you're on the right lines. Cry Havoc have the tunes to get the job done and kick up a storm with the best of them . The band are currently hard at work on their second album, due for release in the first quarter of 2006.

Cry Havoc are a Scottish melodic rock band featuring Eden’s Curse bassist Paul Logue. They’ve released two albums to date, the first of which is re-presented here. To be honest, I hadn’t even heard of this band before running across Refuel on clearance. I’ve had good luck with Majestic titles in the past though, so I gave it a shot.

Refuel is a 2-disc set featuring Cry Havoc’s 2002 debut The Fuel That Feeds the Fire on disc 1 and a second disc with six live tracks. The label cites Dokken and Blue Murder as comparisons, and that sets the bar pretty darned high. The reality is that Cry Havoc is a decent enough melodic rock band, but are probably third tier at best, if WET and Harem Scarem are tier 1 and Tango Down and Farcry are tier 2. The musicianship is solid, but the vocals seem off somehow, like they just don’t fit the songs. And the songs aren’t anything special either. They have a more modern vibe, and there really aren’t any great hooks or melodies to latch onto.

If you’ve seen any of my other reviews, you know I love pretty much all melodic rock albums. Unfortunately, this just isn’t one I enjoyed. Again, it’s decent enough, but nothing special. Even with the nice reissue treatment and extra material, the highest I can give Refuel is 3-stars. You may get more out of it, but I’d definitely recommend sampling some songs first.
