The Refuge Vow: A Sourcebook is a compilation of commentaries and traditional text excerpts on the Buddhist Refuge Vow by various teachers including Chögyam Trungpa, Sakyong Mipham, Tsoknyi Rinpoche and Thrangu Rinpoche, among others. A valuable resource for both those preparing to take the vow, and for teachers of Buddhism.

"The purpose of taking refuge is to awaken from confusion and associate oneself with wakefulness. Taking refuge is a matter of commitment and acceptance and, at the same time, of openness and freedom. By taking the refuge vow we commit ourselves to freedom."
—Chögyam Trungpa

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful and clear, April 25, 2010

If you are considering taking refuge, this is a clear and inspiring little book. There are six short chapters in 65 pages, written by five different authors and taken from their own teachings. I found it very helpful and read it several times before taking refuge, and often refer to it. As for it being repetitive - well, the subject is the refuge vow, and perspective on the subject is given by five separate authors - I would think that repetition is a given - and a benefit - not a detriment.

2.0 out of 5 stars Some good parts, July 12, 2009
This review is from: The Refuge Vow (Paperback)
Some great quotations but you have to search for that. I don't think the spoken work translates that well into writing--should have been a tape perhaps. Explanations not super clear or direct and have lots of repetition. I think this is a difficult concept to understand and could have been written for both sides of the brain in a less discursive way.
Needs one section for Buddha, one for Dharma and one for Sangha with quotations and editor explanation.

One of the all time greats, so if you want refuge and "basic" items explained he is excellent.

I recommend the following teachers besides Trungpa:

Pema Chodron, Susuki Roshi, Chagdud Rinpoche; Katagiri Roshi, Reginald Ray . . . for starters!
