This album is incredible. This album has something for everyone. It takes you through the depths of the Blues, because face it, we all get blue sometimes. But it also has feel good songs to uplift us when we are feeling blue like "Gonna Let Go" and songs to motivate us against any situation like "Refuse to Lose". You have songs about relationships like "Suspicion" and "Hell", because you usually go through some bad relationships before you get lucky enough to find that good one. There are also songs that stand out artistically like "Blame Game" and "Crime Scene", where you are blown away by the songwriting and attention to detail. There are songs like "High Minded" that you can definitely relate to, but that also make you laugh. As a matter of fact, this album sounds amazing, but the songwriting gives you a whole other level of entertainment by itself. I now know that whenever my wife wants to go on a trip somewhere she's never been, I can have her pack up and go to the kitchen, because its right beside the den (c: High Minded for reference and immediate laughter). I can't find a favorite song because I can relate to them all, but If I was forced to pick one, it would be the title track "Refuse to Lose". It motivates me daily, and I hope this album is marketed well and exposed to as many people as possible. This album is for anyone who loves good music. This is what real honest music sounds like. Please ignore any negative reviews as they must be listening to some other album(C: Popeye).

I like this, it's a solid effort from a new (to me anyway) artist. I can't believe this hasn't been mentioned, this guy sounds a lot like Robert Cray, at least his older more blues rocking stuff. Both his singing and guitar playing on each cut reminded me of him. His guitar playing is firmly rooted in contemporary blues with some soul influences. There is no new ground covered here, but this guy can play. All of this adds up to an enjoyable listen.

Jarekus Singleton is one of the new breed of up and coming dynamic blues guitarists and singers who refuse to rehash old blues tunes with new lyrics and and tired guitar licks. Instead, this immensely powerful CD release, appears to rely upon his almost autobiographical rise within the blues community and its effects upon both himself and those men and women who have either been by his side along his musical path, or who have fallen to the wayside of his determination to elevate himself to his own aspirational endeavors. This is one collection of cuts that I have had to play again and again and still tremendously enjoy. Jarekus’s opening cut and album title ‘Refuse to Lose’ says it all, the man is determined to overcome past disappointments and obstacles and follow his vision for himself and his own focus. And that is just one reason why this CD is such a desirable one to have in your collection of blues recordings; it is both a personal expression of Jarekus Singleton’s vision and an updated and relevant collection of strongly lyrical blues which reflects upon both himself and the current blues genre. Backed by his own clean and powerful guitar licks and solid rhythm section, Jarekus kills it in the tune ‘High Minded’ bemoaning the loss of a woman who had her own visions of riches and expected Jarekus to be her own personal Denzel. Fortunately, he wised up and refused to be used. ‘Keep Pushin’ remains one of my favorites from this CD, totally autobiographical from his loss of his first car to his promising basketball career derailed by injury. It’s blues from his beginnings at a club listening to others to his current success on the circuit. ‘Blame Game’, a great song, reminds me of early Taj Mahal with a sweet harmonica backing that is clearly Jarekus’s stretching his own blues voicing.Read more ›

I just saw Jarekus live - exciting young blues guitarist (I heard strains of SRV & Albert King), soulful singer, warm and engaging stage presence. But the real stunner is his talent as a writer - it's definitely the blues but with a fresh approach, contemporary topics and interesting wordplay. See him live but in the meantime, get this CD. It gets better with every listen.

Great debut album from one of music's rising stars. He does a good job recreating his electric live performances. If you care anything about hard driving blues with great guitar riffs, and well written lyrics, BUY it!
