4.0 out of 5 stars A diaper pail I can actually recommend, November 25, 2008
This review is from: Diaper Dekor Plus (Baby Product)
When we needed another diaper pail for a new baby, I went to the shops pretty unenthusiastically. From reading the reviews, it seems none of the diaper pails really works well - they all had lots of issues. But our old Diaper Dekor Plus Diaper Disposal System had worked out OK for us, so I went in search of a second one - the devil you know, and all that.

But I was pleasantly surprised to see that the Diaper Dekor Plus had been substantiallly redesigned and much improved. It's not perfect, and won't eliminate all of the smell, but if the pros and cons match your needs it is recommended.

I'd also add one key point - the new refills aren't popular with many owners, understandably. But rather than using the refills, we started using regular tall kitchen size (13 gallon) trash bags, just because they were easier to find and seemed to do as good or better with the smell. You can of course try the refills or alternatives and see what works for you.

The basic idea is that this has a pedal you step on to open the lid, and you drop the diaper though a trap door into the bin. That's it, so it's quick and easy. The drawback is that the diapers aren't entirely sealed up - there's some smell released when you put a diaper in, and when you empty the pail. In addition, you need to clean the trap door from time to time (though folding the diaper up so there's nothing nasty on the outside reduces how often you have to do that). That works, on balance, for us - but I can see how others might prefer something else.

Relative to the Diaper Genie pails (which seal the diapers by twisting the plastic around them) or other systems, the advantages they pitch for the Diaper Dekor are "No inserting [the diaper way into the pail], No Twisting, No Pushing, No Filters, No Batteries." And for us, that's a better fit: There's always a lot going on at diaper changing time, especially with babies, so we'd rather have something that you can use with one hand, quickly. And something quiet. Though others may prefer the more sealed Diaper Genie system.

By the way, the diapers for young babies, especially breast fed babies, don't smell much - that's not a tough test, so most of the diaper pails will seem great during that stage. If it's your first child, hold off until your child is eating regular food before you write a review about how well it's working!

To compare it to the previous version - if you know the old system, it was far too easy for toddlers to open, and it wasn't as easy to use the foot pedal as it should have been. Those issues have been addressed:

- the foot pedal, to open the lid, is much larger and has been moved inwards, making it much less prone to tipping on a carpet or other uneven surface.

- the outer lid (which opens when you drop a diaper in) has a smaller handle, making it more difficult for toddlers to open

- the inner trap door, where you drop the diaper, is now a single door, not a split door, and can be locked with a wheel to keep toddlers out. Of course, keeping it locked is not really going to be convenient on an every day basis, but lots of toddlers will learn that it's locked and stop trying to open it, at which point you can unlock it. And it's there if you need it. So it's a definite plus.

- the larger top lid (which you open only to change the refill or bag) now has reasonably toddler-proof closure.

- the large front door (again, used only when changing the bag) is also pretty toddler-proof.

- the top section inside is now spring-loaded to improve the seal

I don't know whether to give Regal Lager (the maker of the Diaper Dekor) compliments for improving their design, or brickbats for having released the old version with several issues that would have been obvious if they'd let some real parents use it for a week. So we'll call it a draw. But of course the new product stands on its own.

I can't say I like the colors, rather than the silver trim colr I wish they'd stayed with all white or an off white if they felt they needed to get stylish.

By the way, if you're wondering whether to get the Plus size or the regular size ... I'd say that if you're going to empty it more than once a day, the smaller size might work, but it seems no matter what size your little darling is, they can quickly fill up the Plus. Babies go through lots of diapers. Then as they grow their diapers get bigger. So except in the tightest of spaces, the Plus seems like the way to go.

2.0 out of 5 stars Newer Version of Diaper Dekor, June 8, 2008

I have both the old and new versions of the Diaper Dekor. The new one has a larger foot pedal which does make opening the lid easier. However, this new version must have less than 1/2 the thickness in plastic or a much less rigid version of the plastic. The result is that opening it is very frustrating as the entire structure warps and twists along its long axis to the point that aligning the door latch takes at least 30 seconds with lots of banging with your hand to try to get it to shut. It is inferior to the older version because some MBA told them they would save lots of money on the production by reducing the quality. Don't buy this product if you can get the older version. Why not double/triple the price and use the money to make a stainless steel one?

4.0 out of 5 stars Adequate!, January 7, 2010
By

I did a lot of research before deciding on the Diaper Dekor. We had a hand-me-down Diaper Genie which we think was broken, and did not like (hard to use, hard to empty, etc - all the same complaints as most of the rest of reviews). We needed a solution in our baby's room (previously throwing all away into our main bath garbage can...which became quite icky, quickly); when she was around 8 months. She's now 16 months old.)

After using this for around 8 months, when she's expanding her food quantity and selection, as expected, this system, I'd describe as adequate. My research indicated that, if you DO empty it twice/week (do NOT put 30 dirty diapers in it before emptying!!), and if you DO a lysol-spray and a good VERY hot water cleaning every once-in-awhile, you can keep the smell down. I tested those things. One week I forgot to empty till Sunday (trash day is Tuesday) and wowie......I could hardly stand it. So really, empty it relatively often. I do believe, after my research, that there is NOT a system out there that can contain dirty diaper smell. Period. This is our first kid, but have queried many of my friends who have multiple kids. MOST of those eventually resorted to the "tie-up-dirty-diaper-in-plastic-bag-and-throw-in-outside-or-garage-garbage-can" method. Some had a diaper genie, some had something else, etc etc.

Hope this helps you!

1.0 out of 5 stars Great design horrible order control, September 29, 2010
This review is from: Diaper Dekor Plus (Baby Product)
It does absolutely nothing to contain the odors. I can change it out and within a few dirty diapers the scent coming from it is horrible. It was embarrassing when my Mom came in and accused me of not emptying it for weeks and I'd done it that morning! It's a shame because everything else about the product is great! I wouldn't recommend this item to anyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars You don't have to wait for a full bag!, September 27, 2009
This review is from: Diaper Dekor Plus (Baby Product)
Got a few smelly diapers? You don't need to wait until the bag is full, you knot your own size bag!!!

I got this pail for our 2nd child. Our last pail used regular garbage bags and I thought I liked that more because there weren't any "pricey" refills to get. Well, now that I have this one that you cut and knot at the end, I LOVE IT! There is a little cutter built in for easy bag change. As far as smell, you only smell it when you open the trap door. Normally, just put the balled up diaper on the trap door and close the lid, the diaper falls to the bag.

1.0 out of 5 stars It stinks!, May 5, 2009

After only one week of use, this thing stinks! Even with only one days' worth of diapers in it, after you drop another one in, the whole room REEKS for several minutes. I'm honestly not sure if it's the poop or the fragrance built into the bags, but I can't stand it. Otherwise, I do like the design.

I purchased this system for my 81 year old mom who is incontinent. She is thrilled with it and the difference in the way her house smells was so worth the money. The replacement bags are easy to find and easy for her or my dad to install. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than other diaper disposals!, April 21, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Diaper Dekor Plus (Baby Product)
I have four children and this is my third diaper pail. I kept getting new ones because I couldn't find a diposal that would eliminate the stink or was worth all the work of actually getting the diaper into the pail. Realistically, NO diaper pail is completely stink free. Changing out the bag every 2 or 3 days makes a big difference. The Diaper Dekor is by far the easiest pail to use - none of that twisting, pulling, and pushing as required by others. You just step on the pedal and drop the diaper through the "trap door", which has a child lock if you have curious toddlers. A cutter for removing the used portion of the bag is affixed to the inside of the pail. Plus, it keeps the stench at bay at least as long as any other diposal system. The description of this pail says it can be used later as a standard trash can and I would agree it's an option because of the look of the pail and the pedal. Liked this so much I bought one for my brother and his wife. . . Best pail I've used!

2.0 out of 5 stars Contains diapers, not odors, January 27, 2009
This review is from: Diaper Dekor Plus (Baby Product)
We have been using this poop trap for 8 months. The foot pedal is convenient. The trap door makes it easy to drop the diaper in and the lid shuts as soon as you take your foot off the pedal. This is advertised as being able to hold 30 diapers. Let me tell you something, your baby will probably not mind the smell because they do not know any better. You, on the other hand will throw up in your mouth if you have more than 3 "poopie" diapers in this thing. It does absolutely nothing to contain the odors from #2. Maybe my son is some kind of exception. While I think he is exceptional in many ways, I do not think that his "dirt" is any more exceptional than any other baby his age. We even tried a plug in air freshener right next to the can and it made little difference, just added a bit of a floral sent to the mix and somehow made the foul smell even more foul.

Honestly, I do not see much advantage to this diaper pail over a regular trash can that has a spring loaded lid.

4.0 out of 5 stars I like the Diaper Dekor Plus, March 28, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Diaper Dekor Plus (Baby Product)
The Diaper Dekor Plus works well, still get the occassional stink, but I don't think any diaper pail will remove all the stink. I find it easy to use, and like the pedal to open the top, instead of having to reach down and open it will one hand, while trying to steady the baby with the other hand. I recommend this product to friends.
