Uneven as are most anthologies,
By Doggerel (Earth) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Regency Christmas (Paperback)
Stories are Under the Kissing Bough - Sandra Heath - Despite several tries, I couldn't get past the first page of this story. Season of Joy - Gayle Buck - A nicely told story of a disagreement; he sees his fiancee hug another man. There's an explanation but he simply won't listen and so goes off to war. He leaves her a note allowing her to terminate the engagement she writes back and they begin a correspondance. Unfortunately, this story is mostly told and only the beginning, where we are there to experience the disagreement, is good. The Viscount and the Hoyden - Laura Matthews - This was a lovely low-key 'falling in love' story. Nothing exciting; simply two people drawn together in love and understanding. The Christmas Mouse - Emily Hendrickson - The unpaid sister as governness/nanny inherits a house and she goes there immediately (because she knows her brother and sister-in-law would talk her out of going) where her neighbor saves her from a mouse. Nice and sweet, the misunderstanding is easily resolved and she actually takes the very brave step of telling him she loves him. No Room at the Inn - Mary Balogh - Delightful story of people stranded at an inn; the rake, the governess, the married couple drifting apart, the spinster sisters and... a poor man and his pregnant wife.

This review is from: A Regency Christmas (Paperback)
The main reason I read these Regency anthologies is to 'try out' newer (to me) writers, because there is always one or two writers in the collection that I am not familiar with. This collection had a very nice balance of well written and entertaining Regency themed Christmas stories, by three well known and two not as well known authors. If you think you can enjoy one story and put this book down, I can tell you that I kept reading all the novellas till I finished the book, sometime around 2AM. This is one of the best collections of Regency novellas in recent years. Yes, be ready to add at least two more authors to your reading lists.

Have you ever dreamed of a better life. Take time to read this book. It is an escape for your mind. The authors take you to a different time in history. You find yourself moved as the young women goes from rags to riches, not being appreciated to being loved. A simple romantic cinderella tale. In this story even the mice are cute.
