Book Description

This bargain-priced omnibus edition includes three full-length novels by bestselling author Candice Hern: A PROPER COMPANION, A CHANGE OF HEART, and AN AFFAIR OF HONOR. Fans of the traditional Regency Romances of Georgette Heyer will enjoy these witty, sweet romances about three rakish friends who each finds his life changed dramatically when he meets the right woman.

A PROPER COMPANION: Robert, Lord Bradleigh, is a rakish earl with a recently arranged betrothal to a lovely young girl he barely knows. Emily Townsend is an impoverished, though well-born, spinster employed as a companion to his grandmother, the formidable dowager countess. Robert reluctantly agrees to help his grandmother find a husband for Emily. But once he comes to know her and care for her, he begins to regret his hasty, passionless engagement. This sparkling tale will take you from the Pump Room at Bath to the ballrooms of London, as the unexpected and undeniable attraction between Robert and Emily blossoms into something more ... something that could put one of them in danger.

A CHANGE OF HEART: Jack, Lord Pemerton, is a cynical rake forced by family circumstances to seek a bride. Lady Mary Haviland is a plain, charming, but firmly on-the-shelf spinster who offers to help Jack by presenting him with suitable candidates. When Jack discovers information that makes Mary the perfect candidate, their comfortable friendship takes an unexpected turn. By turns witty and emotional, A CHANGE OF HEART follows the path of two wounded souls from friendship to betrayal to redemption. The ballrooms of London and the rugged cliffs and coves of the South Devon coast come alive in this poignant tale of the healing power of love.

AN AFFAIR OF HONOR: During Meg Ashburton's single London Season she had been a wallflower ignored by all of Society. Except for one man. Lord Sedgewick had danced with her, and she had secretly fallen in love with him. Now, six years later, a carriage accident drops a near-dead Lord Sedgewick practically on her doorstep. Hoping for a second chance at love with him, Meg instead finds her world turned upside-down. From a famous stud farm in the Suffolk countryside to the ballrooms of London, Regency England comes alive in this charming romance.

"Candice Hern is a striking talent of superior merit, one whose intelligence, wit, and craftsmanship are as impressive as her elegant romantic sensibility."
--Romantic Times

3.0 out of 5 stars Oh, those irrepressible rakes! February 25, 2013

And it's fun to read how they're usually caught and bound for the altar by story's end. However, I think these stories are not well served by being presented in a boxed set. Candice Hern is an author who has given me hours of reading pleasure. But, when read one after the other, the similarities among plot and characters become obvious, repetitive and stale.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just like Austin November 16, 2012

I was a bit sceptical about this purchase and thought I might have ended up with a dud - but no! All three novel were very good. Have not read anything by this author before and she has a lovely style. It is reminiscent of Jane Austin. Will be checking out more by this writer.

The quality of these three stories goes in descending order. I think the first was the best (pretty solid barrier that he is already engaged...not one of those silly "misunderstandings"...). It also allowed enough time for feelings to grow, presented a good alternative choice of prospective husband for the heroine, and so on, although the villans were a bit cliché. I think it would be a bit more interesting if the cousin was presented more positively.

The second story was also pretty good. The heroine was different and her backstory was compelling enough. The misunderstanding was not silly...her concern was legitimate, and, to me, it felt like enough build up to fall in love. I thought the reaction of the hero and heroine at the crisis, seemed fitting with their characters. The resolution was okay.

The third story was the least enjoyable. It was still okay, and after the involvement of the hero in the previous two stories, I did want to see him find love, as I probably liked him the best of the three heroes. The characters were mostly good and there were some good points to the story, but the mystery was incredibly obvious and the misunderstanding was silly.

Fair read.

No sex but so interesting dialogue.
Jane Austen can rest easy. So can Georgette Heyer.

Would not run to read more of this author

One must definitely read all three books to get the most of the author's brilliant work. The woven plots fit in so beautifully complimenting the romantic setting and the outstanding personalities of the characters. I also appreciated the historical background that gives an interesting insight on the lifestyle and trends of those times. Must reads!

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth a bundle July 21, 2013

Candice Hern does not get stuck in ruts of dialogue and she is describing the main characters well. I enjoyed reading about the same people throughout the three books. The style of writing for each book changes and the stories play out differently which made them interesting throughout. The first, "Emily", was my favourite and the last, "Sedgewick", was my least favourite. The main characters are older than in most books of the genre and the "romancing" is contained.
