More About the Author

Candice Hern is the bestselling author of Regency romances, historical romance novels set during the English Regency, a period she knows well through years of collecting antiques and fashion prints of the era. She travels to England regularly, always in search of more historical and local color to help bring her books to life, and prides herself on the detailed research that goes into each novel. Her books have won praise for their "intelligence and elegant romantic sensibility" (Romantic Times) , and have been compared to those of Georgette Heyer. Rendezvous Reviews said of one of her books: "Even Jane Austen would have liked this one." Her books have won numerous awards, including the National Readers Choice Award. Candice's award-winning website (www.candicehern.com) is often cited for its Regency World pages, where readers interested in the era will find an illustrated glossary, a detailed timeline, illustrated digests of Regency people and places, articles on Regency fashion, research links, and much more. The website also provides readers with more information on all Candice's books, including excerpts and a look "behind the scenes" of each novel. The quality of these three stories goes in descending order. I think the first was the best (pretty solid barrier that he is already engaged...not one of those silly "misunderstandings"...). It also allowed enough time for feelings to grow, presented a good alternative choice of prospective husband for the heroine, and so on, although the villans were a bit cliché. I think it would be a bit more interesting if the cousin was presented more positively.

The second story was also pretty good. The heroine was different and her backstory was compelling enough. The misunderstanding was not silly...her concern was legitimate, and, to me, it felt like enough build up to fall in love. I thought the reaction of the hero and heroine at the crisis, seemed fitting with their characters. The resolution was okay.

The third story was the least enjoyable. It was still okay, and after the involvement of the hero in the previous two stories, I did want to see him find love, as I probably liked him the best of the three heroes. The characters were mostly good and there were some good points to the story, but the mystery was incredibly obvious and the misunderstanding was silly.

And it's fun to read how they're usually caught and bound for the altar by story's end. However, I think these stories are not well served by being presented in a boxed set. Candice Hern is an author who has given me hours of reading pleasure. But, when read one after the other, the similarities among plot and characters become obvious, repetitive and stale.

I was a bit sceptical about this purchase and thought I might have ended up with a dud - but no! All three novel were very good. Have not read anything by this author before and she has a lovely style. It is reminiscent of Jane Austin. Will be checking out more by this writer.

A Proper Companion
This was a fun easy read and I enjoyed it very much. The main characters were diverting especially the Dowager Lady Bradleigh. Her very proper companion Emily Townsend is a impovershed granddaughter of an earl. He disowned her family because her mother married someone they did't like. So when her father died leaving her with nothing she decided to work as a governess and than as a companion for the Dowager. Like any true romance there is some obstacles in the way of true love and of course the evil bad guy trying to mess everything up. The journey was delightful and I loved the hero, who is the Dowager's grandson Lord Bradleigh. SIGHH. He definitely would break your heart. He's the perfect hero. Just loved him and the book.

A Change of Heart
This is the 2nd book in a seris of regency rakes trilogy. In this book we continue the story of one of Lord Bradleigh's friends. Jack,Lord Pemerton has recently assumed his father's title which he gained because his 2 elder brothers, father and nephew all perished in a boating accident. A confirmed bacholor and Rake he must now marry and marry soon. He has realised the state of his father's affairs and they seem grim. Anyway while he is taking in the season he meets Lady Mary Haviland who at 29 is an old maid. She offers to help him find a bride and so the story takes off from there. She's witty and inpertient and he is still the dangerous rake and so there friendship developes. There are lots of secrets being kept which get in the way of romance but in the end love does win. The journey was full of angst but the end result was worth it. A definite must read!

This is the 3rd book in the Regency Rakes Trilogy.

Candice Hern does not get stuck in ruts of dialogue and she is describing the main characters well. I enjoyed reading about the same people throughout the three books. The style of writing for each book changes and the stories play out differently which made them interesting throughout. The first, "Emily", was my favourite and the last, "Sedgewick", was my least favourite. The main characters are older than in most books of the genre and the "romancing" is contained.

I enjoyed this trilogy.

I thought there were a few places where the stories slowed down - or maybe I was just too eager to get to the happy endings?!

I really enjoy Candice Hern's style of writing. I loved the characters, plots were half decent, and it seemed to capture the Regency period quite nicely.

I recommend these to any historical romance reader.

One must definitely read all three books to get the most of the author's brilliant work. The woven plots fit in so beautifully complimenting the romantic setting and the outstanding personalities of the characters. I also appreciated the historical background that gives an interesting insight on the lifestyle and trends of those times. Must reads!

Just finished the 3rd novel in this series and I have to say it was both a bargain and a pleasure to read. Not excessively smutty but full of twists and misunderstandings that lead to humor and happy endings. A great summer read if you're looking for some light fiction that makes you chuckle and warms your heart.
