Book Description

1995
"The Regency Returns: Since 1979 the Spinward Marches have been the birthplace of most Traveller campaigns. Although the Marches have undergone changes and felt their share of hard knocks, they have endured. And whether you think of the area as the Spinward Marches, the Domain of Deneb, or the Regency, it is still home sweet home, and it has now returned, in all of its multi-faceted glory, for Traveller: The New Era Keepers of the Flame: The citizens of the Regency are citizens of the Third Imperium. They are the reverent guardians and sturdy repository of all that was great in that society, and they are pledged to carry its light back into the darkened universe. But this has not been easy. The effort to keep the Virus at bay took the better part of two generations, and absorned most of the energy and productive capacity this society had. And now, with the great external threat seeming to recede, old repressed rivalries are re-emerging, just as the Regency is poised to spring again into the stars. Enemies Within and Without: The Regency is burdened with a restive class of disenfranchised nobility, shunted aside by the wave of democratic reforms. Aslan Ihatei squatters within the Regency borders, never quite assimilated into human society, are beginning to call attention to their demands, both from the Regency government and from their clan brethren outside the Regency border. Vargr splinter groups, driven into the Regency with the decimation of their own societies, will stop at nothing to fuel the recovery of their homeworlds in the Wilds. Sword World irredentism is again on the rise. And as if that weren't enough, their stable neighbors the Zhodani now seem to be coming completely apart, wracked by internal war and flooding the Regency with waves of refugees..."

5.0 out of 5 stars "The Flame" that is Kept Burning by the Regency +++, March 6, 2011

This review is from: The Regency Sourcebook: Keepers of the Flame (Traveller New Era Sci-Fi Roleplaying) (Paperback)
"The Flame" that is kept burning by the Regency -- is quoted from page five of this book -- and what this book IS for keeping the flame of Traveller alive. It is an intensely worked-out presentation of the survival of the Imperium in the New Era [in a new compact somewhat more populist form]. The work itself is very informative for one of the favorite general areas of Traveller -- somewhat centered on the Spinward Marches and with other main regions near that. I really like that this sourcebook is well-organized -- with many maps, charts and tables of data. Yet this hard crunch is glued together by excellent ideas and descriptions. The grand poetry of page four -- "Keep the Flame" of Noris Aelia Aledon the First Regent -- is VERY inspiring indeed.

This particular [somewhat limited] Regency setting is a good balance between other Traveller settings centered somewhat on the Spinward Marches [by whatever name]. It's quite large yet quite smaller than the whole Third Imperium. It's centered on a blend of major and minor human types yet has aliens within and without its defended borders. The Regency is just getting set to reclaim other Third Imperium areas, claiming its legacy and destiny -- despite some added aspects of populism, psionics and hi-tech. The author modestly claims to have considered a much larger work that may have taken several more years to compose -- but presented this compact work sooner due to intense Traveller gamer demand for the whole Regency setting soonest. However that may be, this 96 page Regency sourcebook is just that -- a sourcebook for most Regency topics in the Traveller New Era general setting. It covers the still quite vast Regency setting -- much like several sourcebooks would in other Traveller variants -- at a minor cost of small font. As the author remarks -- "efficiency is not the same as effectiveness" -- but this work is very much both +++
