Book Description

September 1, 2003 Christian Heritage
John Charles Ryle (1816 – 1900) was the first Bishop of Liverpool, England. After a dazzling sporting career at school and university, poised on the verge of national recognition, he gave it all up to become a minister in the Church of England.

However, his leadership abilities on the field of play stood out and prepared him for the difficult task of being an evangelical leader of a mixed diocese in the most sectarian of English cities.

Throughout his period in office Ryle was respected by his colleagues to the extent that even one of his most strident opponents broke down and wept at the news of his death. He was able to master the difficult task of being firm in his beliefs and loving in his application of them. His gracious spirit is an example to us today.

This is probably why many of Ryle's writings have been continuously in print for over 100 years. Here Ryle explains that divisive, often derided (and misapplied by advertising) term 'born again'. He explains what being 'born again' means, why it is necessary and how you can tell whether you are.

Much of the value of this publication, though, lies in what Ryle writes next. In his gracious yet firm way Ryle devotes the majority of the book to explaining how the objections people have had to the doctrine should be handled and overcome with gentle persuasion.

It is a supreme example of the art of persuasion.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Glorious Gospel, March 8, 2010
This review is from: Regeneration: Being 'Born Again' What it means and why it's neccessary (Christian Heritage) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is an incredibly concise Gospel tract. Ryle covers 3 things: What is regeneration, why is it necessary and how do we know what it looks like. He then answers 6 objections, the majority of which were controversies in his day that still hold some value in reading, even though they may be technically irrelevant to many in the American church.

Ryle has one focus in this tract: being born again. As a youth pastor, I am always seeking how to best counsel teenagers. The first thing I ask is this: is this person born again? Do they have a new nature, or are they still confined to the old man? This book just adds to the great Truth of the Gospel of Christ, that it is nothing you can say or do that will save you, but it is the work of God in your heart. He creates a new man where the old man once was, and that new man has new desires, new priorities, new everything. If a person is not regenerate, if he is not new, he does not have eternal life. No, he is not born again.

Ryle ends his book with this, "You and I are traveling to a place where controversies will all be forgotten, and nothing but eternal realities remain. Would you have a real hope in that day? See to it that you have a real regeneration. Nothing else will do. "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God (John 3:3)." The truth of the Gospel is so simple, and it is so humbling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truth plain and simple!, July 8, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Regeneration: Being 'Born Again' What it means and why it's neccessary (Christian Heritage) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is my first book that I have read concerning "Regeneration" and I would recommend it by far. Regeneration is nothing new to me because if it was then I wouldn't be acquainted with God Almighty. The only thing I would recommend to anyone willing to create a book like this would be to leave out "church", articles that were derived from "church", or simply anything to do with "church" period! "Doing church" has nothing whatsoever to do with walking with God or simply being His child. Church is simply an extension off the mother of all harlots, The Roman Pagan Catholic Church who is ran by anti Christ (POPE). If she is the mother then who are the children? That's a rhetorical question of course! To get back to the book, if you are concerned with your soul about a life that hasn't changed after hearing the gospel and have been wondering why then I would pick up this book and read about what "must" take place in your walk with God Almighty. The answer is simple really, either God does a supernatural work in you bringing forth fruit worthy of repentance or He does not! There is no signing up for Jesus as some may think. If you think you can profess to be Christian all the days of your life and remain in a carnal state throughout all of those days then you are dead wrong! There must be a change! Will we fall at times, YES! Will we make slips and mistakes, YES! Can we remain Christian and not ever be changed, NO! If you do not have a changed life or a changing life in motion then you do not belong to God! If you do not hate the sins you once loved then you do not belong to God! This is the truth you will not hear in your precious church organization! Most people in church do not want the truth because they simply hate God! They want and love this world even though we are told as Christians not to love the world or the things in the world! There must be a change!

Rick
