I love this dvd!!! A must have for true reggae collectors...., April 7, 2007
This review is from: Reggae on the River (DVD)
Are you kidding me? This dvd is one of my favorite reggae concert dvds of all time, and I have a collection of nearly 100 now. The opening Third World "96 Degrees in the Shade" will amaze you; Michael Franti blows everyone away with "We Don't Stop", David Lindley is superb with "Quarter of a Man", and Anthony B gives one of his best performances ever recorded on film. If "Raid the Barn" or Toots and the Maytals don't get you skankin', then nothing on this planet will. I was at Reggae on the River 06, and this dvd was the reason we decided to make that trip from San Diego. A MUST HAVE! I would give this one 6 stars if humanly possible. A few of the songs are a little disappointing (I'm not a big fan of Baby Cham, and Marcia Griffiths butchers Bob Marley's classic "Redemption Song"), but the rest are absolutely phenomenal. If all reggae concert dvds had this level of production quality, then it would make our lives a lot eaiser. BUY THIS DVD!!! You'll thank me later.

AAAAAAAAWESOME, September 7, 2007
This review is from: Reggae on the River (DVD)
WOW!!! What can I say more about this DVD than it's probably the best reggae DVD on the market. Good Music and extraordinary quality in sound and picture. Anyone who owns reggae DVDs knows: Sometimes the quality really sucks or is just OK. But this one is at least fantastic in sound & picture quality. I've never been at this festival but visited some others. And I can really say: There are hardly other music DVDs that give you such a live feeling as "Reggae at the River" does. For those who love reggae music: THIS DVD IS A MUST!!!

both a great documentary and live music experience, May 14, 2007
This review is from: Reggae on the River (DVD)
"Reggae on the River" offers a surprisingly thorough look at America's largest reggae festival. Entitled "the story," the first disc looks at the festival experience. Reggae on the River happens at one of the most beautiful sites imaginable. The event is not held at a concert venue but on an actual section of California's Eel River. Campers must actually navigate river rocks to pitch their tents. The charitable motivation of the event is explained. Entitled "the music," the second DVD features live nuggets. The first few songs are epic. Available on an accompanying CD, Third World's '96 Degrees In The Shade,' Culture's 'International Herb' and Toots & The Maytals' '54-46 Was My Number' comprise the highlights. Reading the other reviews, it becomes clear that some fans don't yet know the difference between dancehall and hip-hop. If Bob Marley and roots reggae is the listener's definition of reggae, the live disc will be uneven given the attention to dancehall and pop reggae. In this respect, the disc covers a broad scope of popular Jamaican music, only excluding dub. While the audio and video for both discs is excellent, the second disc is beautifully mixed for surround sound. "Reggae on the River" portrays an epic event that makes the viewer want to pack up the VW and drive straight to Humboldt County!
