5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT BOOK LONG OVERDUE.*****, June 27, 1998
This review is from: Regimental Beer Steins of the Imperial German and Royal Bavarian Armies and the Imperial German Navy, 1890 to 1914 (Hardcover)
AN ESSENTIAL PART OF ANY REGIMENTAL STEIN COLLECTOR'S LIBRARY, REGIMENTAL BEER STEINS SHOWS AT LEAST TWO VIEWS IN COLOR OF 239 STEINS RANGING FROM COMMON TO RARE. MR. HEILIGENSTEIN'S BOOK IS A EXCELLENT REFERENCE WITH INFORMATION ON THE LIFE OF A RECRUIT, HISTORY OF THE GERMAN ARMY AND NAVY, A LIST OF REGIMENTS BY ARMY CORP AND BY NUMERICAL ORDER AND A LIST KINDOMS, DUCHIES, PRINCIPALITIES AND THEIR SOVEREIGNS. THE MAJORITY OF THE BOOK COVERS ALL FACETS OF REGIMENTAL STEINS AND THE ASPECTS THAT ARE IMPORTANT TO THE COLLECTOR.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Novice Regimental Stein collector who has benefited, March 19, 2000
This review is from: Regimental Beer Steins of the Imperial German and Royal Bavarian Armies and the Imperial German Navy, 1890 to 1914 (Hardcover)
Regimental stein collectors whether new or well versed will benefit greatly from this book. Mr. Heiligenstein has laid the information out in a logical and orderly fashion. Making it extremely easy to use. The manner at which Mr. Heiligenstein has chronologically presented the history of the regiments, and the principals involved was fantastic. The person purchasing this book will quickly be assisted by years of research and experience put to print by Mr. Heiligenstein. In addition to all of this. The stein illustrations with their double view frames is a novel idea. The stein collector who attempts to collect steins without this book in his reference library is in trouble. Trust me on this, I was there!

5.0 out of 5 stars Surpasses anything available in the past years., June 28, 1999

This review is from: Regimental Beer Steins of the Imperial German and Royal Bavarian Armies and the Imperial German Navy, 1890 to 1914 (Hardcover)
I have read Mr R. Ron Heiligenstein's book Regimental Beer Steins. As a regimental stein collector I find that his book gives great insight to the origination and the on going understanding of the regimental stein. His individual photographs and comments on each allow the collector to seek out and gain an understanding of their own collection visually. Mr. Heiligenstein does not spoon feed the reader but he does supply the information that the collector needs to advance his knowledge of rgimental stein collecting. The book is not only educational but is attractive to display for all to see. It is my opinion that Mr. Heiligenstein's book with it's wealth of knowledge should be an addition to all stein collectors reference material.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heiligenstein displays an impressive mastery of his subject, June 13, 1998

This review is from: Regimental Beer Steins of the Imperial German and Royal Bavarian Armies and the Imperial German Navy, 1890 to 1914 (Hardcover)
Mr. Heiligensteins book is a must for the serious collecter, but also has appeal for the merely interested . Filled with beautiful illustrations of Regimental Beer Steins, it details the history of the formation of the modern German state, from which sprung the nationalist, military traditions so much a part of the German character. The book's Beer Steins and history end with the begining of the first World War, which many historians equate with the cultural, if not the actual, beginning of the 20th century. Heiligenstein's book is a look at Imperial Germany before Hitler and the Third Reich, a time when the German miltary tradition was still honorable, and even envied, and the tragedies of the 1930's and 40's were yet to come.
