Este libro es acerca de cómo la buena ciencia puede asistir la conservación de la biodiversidad en Colombia, un país en que la naturaleza se destruye a un ritmo desmesurado.

El lector se encontrará con una descripción sencilla y sofisticada de una región con características ecológicas únicas: el desierto de La Tatacoa. Los autores caracterizan los aspectos ambientales y sociales para definir los límites del área a proteger, y para establecer cuáles podrían ser las alternativas de desarrollo socioeconómico que la población humana de la zona debería llevar a cabo en orden de minimizar al máximo los impactos ambientales. Así, determinan que las actuales actividades productivas, especialmente la ganadería, no son sostenibles y seguramente terminarán destruyendo la región completa si no se toman medidas al respecto.

La fundamentación teórica de la propuesta de selección, delimitación y manejo es lo mejor del manuscrito; esto no quiere decir que la escritura y el contenido visual no tengan mérito, pues la redacción, los mapas y las fotografías hacen más comprensible y agradable la lectura del mismo. En el libro se expone de manera muy clara por qué los argumentos biológicos o ecológicos deben primar sobre los económicos, por ejemplo, en casos donde la conservación de la naturaleza es el objetivo a cumplir. A pesar de lo anterior, se valoran los aportes que pueden tener otros campos de conocimiento, como el Derecho, al momento de diseñar una norma que legalice el estatus de protección de un área que se pretende destinar a la conservación de la biodiversidad.

Todo aquel que quiera encontrarse con una propuesta de conservación de la naturaleza novedosa, sólida desde el punto de vista argumentativo y con potencial real de aplicación, debería consultar o adquirir este libro. Una vez que lo lean, comprenderán que la propuesta que hace el Grupo Arco es, además de interesante, la mejor.

This book is about how good science can assist the conservation of biodiversity in Colombia, a country where nature is being destroyed at a relentlessness rate.

The reader will face a simple but sophisticated description of a region that has unique ecological attributes: La Tatacoa desert. The authors characterize the environmental and the social factors to define the boundaries of the area that is going to be protected, and to establish which ones could be the alternatives of socioeconomic development that the human populations of the zone should seek in order to minimize the environmental impacts. Thus, they determine that the actual productive activities, especially the ones related with cattle, are unsustainable and will surely destroy de whole region if proper measures are not taken in the short term.

The theoretical foundation of the selection, definition of the boundaries and the management of the area is the best thing of the manuscript; this does not mean that the writing and the visual contents have no merit at all, the editing, the maps and the pictures make the reading even more understandable and pleasant. The book shows clearly why biological or ecological arguments should be prior to, for example, economic ones in cases where nature conservation is the main objective. In spite of that, the contribution that other fields of knowledge can add is welcomed and valued, such as the Right, specifically at the time of designing a law that legalize the status of protection of a specific area that is supposed to conserve biodiversity.

Everyone who wants to find himself with a proposal about the conservation of nature that is novel, solid from the argumentative point of view, and with real potential of being enforced, should consult or acquire this book. Once you have read it, you will understand that the Grupo Arco's proposal is, besides being interesting, the best one available in the field.

It is a pity that there is no English version of the book.
