Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

No one is likely going to challenge Elvis Crespo's claim to the king-of-merengeue throne. But he lets us know who's top dog, anyway, on comeback disc Regreso el Jefe (The Boss Has Returned). It's his first effort in three years but also signifies a return to artistic form after a few lukewarm releases. Regreso el Jefe is also Crespo's first release under the reggaeton-heavy Machete Music banner, but don't expect any awkward pairings. There are a few urban flourishes and harder edges on tunes "Bambaribiri" and "Ito Ito Bonito," but that's the extent of the makeover. It's business as usual on much of the disc, which keeps Crespo at the forefront. He meshes effortlessly with the swaying merengue grooves, particularly on joyous title track "La Foto Se Me Borro." A welcome return from a reliably electric entertainer. --Joey Guerra

5.0 out of 5 stars Regreso el AWESOME, December 11, 2007
This review is from: Regreso El Jefe (Audio CD)
I got really hooked on Latin Pop artists like Olga Tanon, La India and Marc Anthony. Desperate to discover some more artists in this genre, I gave this CD by Elvis Crespo a try and I'm really glad I did because it is great. Like Olga Tanon, Crespo is known as a merengue artist, but while Tanon has expanded her range to include pop, Crespo sticks mainly to merengue, although other Amazon reviewers have pointed out that it's really more of a merengue/dance hybrid. I should add here that La India and Marc Anthony are famous for salsa, which is slightly slower and has a different rhythm from merengue. Anyhoo, back to Crespo, some people find his weird throaty/nasal voice annoying, but I find that it has real charm and works really well for the songs that he performs, most of which are self-penned on this album. The album has nice hip/hop-urban flourishes which keep it relevant for today's pop market, but never betrays the merengue influence that guides most of the album. Some tracks like "Con El Tiempo Y Un Ganchito" will no doubt leave listeners unable to avoid turning up the volume, it is so catchy and fun. And, really, that's the way the whole album is. I find I can listen to it over and over again, and it's been several weeks since I first picked it up. I can't recommend it enough for those who are interested in Latin Pop.
