Book Description

** Re-edited and Revised Version Published 12/23/14 **

Dan blamed himself for his wife's untimely death... at first, that is.

Dan, a newly published bestselling author, has just begun to taste the good life: Money in the bank, house in a quiet neighborhood, beautiful wife. His monster of a fictional character--a wealthy, handsome, womanizing murderer--is the catalyst for Dan's good fortune, intriguing millions of readers. But when Dan sleeps with his agent on a business trip, and then confesses the whole thing to his wife in near tears, he sets off a chain of events that cause him to lose his wife and his grip on everything, including reality.

Fleeing his hometown in an attempt to outrun tormenting memories, Dan lands himself in a nearly forgotten small town in Oklahoma, taking up indefinite refuge in a Bed and Breakfast. While here, Dan's demons begin to prey on his mental instability, and the character that he's thrilled his readers with begins to come off the page and out into the flesh, sending shockwaves through the otherwise peaceful town, and giving Dan some interesting and horrific ideas on how to cope with his pain.

Editorial Reviews

"A lot of books these days are predictable, but not this one." ~ Cheryl Bradshaw, Shamus Award Finalist and USA Today Bestselling author

"Dan Dawkins writes a story that grips you from the start, then leaves you with a lump in your throat and a sharp pain in your chest.  A page-turner from the beginning until the end, Regret is simply fascinating."

5.0 out of 5 stars This novel will keep you guessing! April 25, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Oh what a tangled web we weave...this is a good way to describe Regret. What initially attracted me (besides the fact that it was nicely formatted and easy to read) was the use of language throughout the novel. He does a great job of turning a phrase. I also enjoyed many of the chapter endings and thought he did a good job of creating a hook that makes the reader want to keep reading. Here's an example of that:

"It was only a few hours after this that I awakened naked in Jenna's hotel, her body pressed against mine, under the sheets of the bed, and had then been propelled into the unbelievable and despair-filled horror that would become the rest of my life."

A lot of books these days are predictable, but not this one. There were twists and turns that I didn't see coming, and I can usually guess what's going to happen next, so I really enjoyed the surprise that came with not knowing what to expect.

The novel is well written and well thought out, and I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top-Notch Thriller March 17, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the kind of book I've always wanted to read, different in a good way. You will be caught off guard in this fast-paced thriller. Moving storyline, yet psychologically complex. I'd recommend Regret to anyone looking to be entertained by a pulse-pounding page-turner.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed August 8, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I cannot figure out how this book ever got published with all of the grammar and spelling errors. I really didn't think that could happen. I had a hard time with the story because I kept getting distracted with the bad grammar and misspelled words. It would have been a pretty decent book if not for that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping March 2, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you buy this book, I suggest that you block the next day or two out of your usual schedule. Once you get into the story, you are carried along like a canoe headed for the waterfall. You'll be inside the skin of a man who is going mad from guilt and grief. You know from the beginning that there can be no happy ending. And, yes, it's not pleasant as you approach the waterfall and know that there's no way to escape the inevitable.

It's true that some better editing would have been desirable. But the author writes in a style that makes you feel that the narrator is talking straight to you. It's truly gripping. And emotionally painful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book! March 7, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This was one of those rare books that I just could not put down. I had never read this writer and just loaded it because it was a free Kindle download. It was awesome! A look at psychosis from the 'bad guy' perspective. But the writer was able to make the reader see Dan as a real person, a man we could sympathize with...then he takes you into the darkness that encompassed him. Highly recommend this book for anyone who is fascinated with the psychological thriller genre.

Good surprise ending but lots of misspelled words and crummy punctuation. The message is good but some chapters are too graphic and didn't do anything for the story, just added shock value.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read! May 20, 2013

I read alot of the reviews before reading this book, and I thought it was totally engrossing, I was caught up from the first chapter, and couldn't put it down. For those concentrating on miss spelled words and language, unless it's numerous times on one page or out of control, I don't pay attention to it. I read a book for the story itself, not to complain about errors. THIS BOOK is worth the read, from beginning to end!

1.0 out of 5 stars warped speed May 11, 2012

I started this book with such optimism, and was enjoying it quite a bit. Then it got sick, and when the murdering started I wanted to quit reading, except I made a commmittment to never do that, so I finished it. It took me a long time to do that, and the more I read the more unreal it became and deranged. This is the first book I truly hated!
