5.0 out of 5 stars Best historical fiction I've read in a long time!, August 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Regulus (Paperback)
I read this book because I like historical novels, particularly ancient history. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself in an ancient time that no other novelist, or for that matter, movie, had exposed me to. I never realized that Roman civilization of that period was so different from later periods. Dynda paints a vivid picture of a life and times in a manner that I could identify with, even though it all took place over two thousand years ago. The style and story reminded me of the works of Dumas. You see everything through the eyes of the main character and in that way the author heightens suspense. And there certainly is a lot of that woven through the political interplay, the bittersweet romance, and vivid battle scenes. Dynda describes a number of battles which leave you shaken as if you'd actually stood on the battlefield. Yet, although war is the backdrop of much of this story, it reaches beyond to the human side. We see a man evolve, escaping the temptations of blind ambition to seek out and find a higher meaning to his life even as the society around him begins its long spiral downward. It felt refreshing to have a number of idealistic characters to identify with. I can also see the parallels Dynda was trying to draw between Roman society then and 20th century America. In summary, I came away entertained and educated, making the book worth every ounce of time I invested in reading it.
