5.0 out of 5 stars Artistic, Purpose Driven, Anger, January 5, 2002

This review is from: A Rehearsal for the Great Uprising (Audio CD)
The $eth Project does for 90's anger rock what Pink Floyd did for the Rock of the 70's: it grows it up, makes you think, and demands at once that you both scrutinize the sounds on headphones and open your windows to crank it out with the volume on 10 for the whole neighborhood to hear. And, like that music, it just might affect how you think. The 9 song album A Rehearsal for the Great Uprising raises the bar for modern protest music inherited from the punk of the last 20 years. The bar is raised not only because $eth, the heart of the project, frames the issues with compelling words, but also with compelling, challenging music. $eth writes the songs and sings, plays guitar, bass and trumpet. The other essential element is rythym, provided by set player Matt Fit, percussionist RJ, and DJ Gossie. The project then brings in other contributers, and there are many, to accentuate the different musical angles $eth needs to create this incredible tapestry of anger, sadness, inspiration, and education.
From before the opening song, "Spark," the mood is set that this is no ordinary album. The sound of tuning strings brings us into $eth's musical world as flies on the wall in his musical process. The mumblings and instructions we hear between songs throughout the album make this a concept album in the tradition of the concepts of the 70's. "Spark" lets us know right away that this album is not about $eth, it's about us, and he wants us to see things differently when it is over. We then go on a journey through rock instrumental ("Power"), which evokes at once an acoustic Metallica and a post war Russian string quartet , to a folk influenced tour of modern societal oppression of women ("Clothesline") and all the way to a balls-out statement of nature's rights ("Widowmaker"). There are no two songs which sound alike here, and no two songs which think alike either, although all of the thoughts are consistent with one another.
The Great Uprising of the title is not necessarily an uprising of overt political overthrow. In "Wake up" $eth states his agenda clearly; stop being zombies, be critical thinkers. The uprising this album asks for and inspires is an uprising of the mind, a revolution of paradigm, a striving for a truer equality, which will necessarily cause societal change equally violent to some peoples ideas as the images on the cover are to property.
