To everyone --

I am devastated to see this stellar work selling poorly. After spending several years studying the German record in World War I, well, I have to say that this work is better than all others. What is wrong with our critics and historians, not to see this as stellar, and not to recommend it? It is deeper on its subject than all competitors. What more to say?

Note please that most historians think that the Germans merely over-reacted in World War I, in Belgium. Only this author understands that there was a neo-Nazi element in Germans then, from the beginning, that pushed them toward genocide in Belgium at this early date. (Only the wonderful Herbert Hoover, and his rescue committees, saved the Belgians in this time frame, but that is another story)....

What more to say? Buy this book, steal it, quote it....

I won't spend time extolling the merits of this book; suffice to say that if you wish to understand what and why the German Army committed what it did in Belgium in August 1914 this book is a must read.

A note of caution: the book was reviewed in "The American Historical Review" in June of 2008. The reviewer simply extracted portions of the book completely out of context and made Lipkes conclusions as to the character of German soldiers in Belgium seem ill founded if not nonsensical.

Lipkes responded in the same year(Vol. 113,No.4 (October 2008), pp 1302-1303) and destroyed the arguments of the reviewer.

If you decide to read the book and while long, it is a wonderful read, be sure to read Lipkes "Afterword".I would provide a link were it not for Amazon policies. Just Google " Afterword Lipkes"

Best regards,
James

This is a fascinating read...all 700 pages of it. He goes into great detail on the german invasion of Belgium. I have done a lot of my own research on this subject and this is probably one of the most thorough books on the subject.
