5.0 out of 5 stars Mellow, lovely Reicha, February 16, 2010

This review is from: Reicha: Wind Quintets, Op. 88, No. 2 And Op. 100, No. 5 (Audio CD)
These performances are dramatically different from those of the Albert Schweitzer Wind Quintet in its complete Reicha series on the cpo label. The Schweitzer group really kicks the music along. The Thompson ensemble is much mellower, with slower tempos and a plusher tonal quality. I enjoy both approaches equally. But for someone seeking an introduction to this wonderful body of music--the closest we have to Beethoven in the wind quintet literature--I think this disc is ideal. It includes Reicha's biggest "hit" (Op. 88, No. 2), it's beautifully recorded, and the price is right.
