Book Description

Stoneways Trilogy October 2, 2007
Not until he came out of the trees did Reiffen realize this wasn't a pasture like the ones back home. Halfway up the slope a circle of tall white stones rose ominously from the lush green of the grass, like the tips of some great and terrible claw buried deep beneath the meadow....

Reiffen, only twelve years old, is the true heir to the thrones of both Wayland and Banking. He and his friends Avender and Ferris live in a magical world of talking animals, dwarves, and shape-shifting bears but…he lives with the shame of knowing that no one will ever let him rule these kingdoms, that their crowns will bring him nothing but betrayal and sorrow…and that he is powerless. Reiffen will have only a short life of child's innocence, a brief respite from the trial of impossible adult responsibility, the trial of attempting to finish a task he can never complete.

As he stepped between the slabs, he forced himself to look at the circle….The stones were tall and white and unlike any rock he had ever seen before….There were thirteen of them altogether, spaced irregularly around the circle. None had fallen, but only one or two stood straight. Mostly they leaned this way and that, left and right, forward and backward. Despite himself, he shuddered….

And then he was shown the nations of his world from the peak of a fortress drear and tempted with fame and fortune and his rightful place on the throne of great kingdoms--his kingdoms. He need only surrender his humanity; kill his loves and he would have his childhood fantasy.

He would be granted great Black knowledge, more furious than anything he had ever imagined. He could desire justice…but would have to kill everything he loved to get it. His prayers would be answered…if only he would sacrifice everything he held dear.

The earth inside the ring was blackened. Here and there the ground itself had heaved and crumbled, as if whatever had seared the grass had not been content with the burning, but had needed to rip up everything by the roots as well in some places, before trampling it all back underfoot. It was a dead, evil place. Even the smell was different, as if the very moisture of the air had been boiled away, leaving only dry dust in its place.

Reiffen's Choice is the first book in a trilogy about innocence and struggle that can only be compared to Eragon and Eldest, The Once and Future King and Raymond E. Feist's Magician. It will be an experience you will never forget.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7-10–As the exiled heir to thrones in two kingdoms, Reiffen lives under constant threat of danger from his uncle, King Brannis, who wants to keep his lineage a secret. The 12-year-old prince is faced with an even greater threat, however, when he is kidnapped by a trio of wizards who plan to place him on the throne as their puppet. Subjected to both magical and psychological methods of persuasion, Reiffen must choose whether or not he will be a willing participant in the wizards' scheme. His rescuers, consisting of a dwarf, a shape-shifting bear, and two childhood friends, must travel through the cavernous underground world of the dwarves to reach him. Planned as a trilogy, this first novel is ambitious in its scale, but falls short of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings epic that obviously inspired it. The story is full of hard-to-pronounce names of people and places. The explanation of Reiffen's exile comes too late, and background mythology that would have eased confusion is not fleshed out enough. Instead, too many details are included about the scenery and, as a result, the adventure is often bogged down by description. This book has enough action, imagination, and witty repartee between characters to hold the interest of readers who give it a chance, but they will undoubtedly be frustrated with its many incongruities.–Emily Rodriguez, Alachua County Library District, Gainesville, FL

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic book!!!!!, September 5, 2006

(REAL NAME)
If you like fantasy books - the kind that draw you into a new world, the kind that have fascinating, 'real-feeling' characters making difficult decisions, but still maybe managing to have a bit of fun along the way - you're going to love this book.

And it's the first in a trilogy, which, in this case is a good thing. Not because the author is going to drag the story on forever & ever & never get anywhere, because you won't feel cheated at the end of book one, just eager to read the next book! But the real reason this is a good thing is because it means we're going to get to visit the world of Valing Manor and the Stoneways and even Ussene at least a couple more times.

More of Redburr and his slightly skewed but always hilarious worldview. More of Avender's life, and what he chooses to do with it. More of Ferris' acerbic wit. More of Skimmer the nokken! And of course, more about the choices Reiffen will have to make and the consequences of those decisions. All of which make the prospect of looking forward to two more books in the Stoneways trilogy a very good thing indeed.

I loved this book and can't wait for the next one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Reality-based Reader Enters Fantasy World, November 11, 2006
You already know the plot of this book, so I will make a strong statement that I am not a fantasy genre book lover, and then urge you to buy/read this book.
Well-written, compelling story. Well-paced, characters you can relate to, each bringing some gift to the table/journey. Connected to history without indulgent detail. Good range of evil, both magical and human. Love these scrappy kids and love forward to being with them in Book Two when we learn more about the Q: Can a young boy stay strong in his core while being offered seductive power, particularly a boy who is not as whole as when we first met him? Thank you for an exciting introduction to people and creatures I don't know but whom I want to know better.
