Dragon's Soar!,
By Cathy Mara (Greensboro, NC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Reign of the Dragon (Paperback)
Reign of The Dragon was a FUN book! The plot moved along smoothly, the characters were interesting, and I was kept guessing as to what was going to happen next. The book started with a torture scene but the novel wasn't full of just gore and beheadings. The basic plot was a quest, found in a lot of fantasy books, but this one kept me intrigued. The book has an unexpected ending and leaves you wanting to read more. Vestia Omthos is on the run from Illdred, the High Wizard of Zale. Drodan, a scribe, is out to avenge his father's death at Illdred's hand. Grang, the dragon in the book, was the best character of all even though he only played a small role. Natia, the Queen of Zale, is a bitter woman looking to place her son on the city's throne. The only thing I didn't like about the novel was the editing. The pages weren't properly spaced, there were mis-spelled words, and sometimes the scene changes were jarring. I also thought the book was a little overpriced for a paperback. However, I would still recommend the book to readers and would buy any other novels by this author. I was throughly entertained from start to finish.

I kept trying to like this book. Its written a bit awkward. The view point changes from paragraph to paragraph at times. The author doesn't seem to have a grasp of motivation for her characters. The main characters emotions don't seem to fit most situations. Use of language is a bit stifled. The pace is pretty good and probably the only thing that kept me reading. The best part of the book was when she began to tell from the Queen's point of view but then a few pages later the Queen's character is very rigid and you no longer see the insite that you did. Like I said I really tried...

Reign Of Th Dragon,
By Vickie Maness (NC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Reign of the Dragon (Paperback)
I read Reign Of The Dragon because it was written by a local writer from my hometown. I have never read fantasy before and was pleasantly surprised by this novel. The book follows the adventures of a scribe named Drodan, as he searches for the Stone of the Zarians. The scribe is out to avenge his father's death at the hand of Illdred, the High Wizard of Zale. He is helped out by a thief named Trelar, that also happens to be his best friend. The two men save a shape-shifter named Lyka and the fun begins. The best parts of the novel are the scenes with the dragon, Grang. I was kept amused, and a little nervous as Vestia, one of the main characters, converses with the awesome beast. The pace of the book was just right and there was enough suspense to keep me reading. The major disappointment of the novel was the editing job. I found a few misspelled words and some sentenances did not begin with a capital letter. There were some awkward paragraphs that I had to go back and read to make sure I understood just what was going on. Some of the action scenes jolted me as the point of view changed. But, all in all, I was pleased. Vickie Maness
