4.0 out of 5 stars Hellishly Good Time, March 5, 2011

This review is from: Reign in Hell (Paperback)
The DC mini-series "Reign in Hell" is the most in depth look at the DC version of Hell and a great overview of the magic-based characters as they try to affect the outcome of a war in the netherworld. As one might imagine, this mini-series is not light fare but its also densely written, surprisingly well-scripted and relies on the rich history of DC characters and its continuity. Satanus and his sister Blaze war against Neron for control of hell as Zatanna, Zatara, Dr. Fate, Sargon, Black Alice, Etrigan & Shadowpact enter the fray. While the series was not on par with minis vying for major shake ups in the DC universe, there are some notable events here such as a tragic event for Zatanna and a major revelation about Lobo. For readers looking to see the magicians of DC gathered to blast the forces of evil as the villainous scheming reaches Machiavellian heights, dig into Reign in Hell. Its a fun and devious ride.

3.0 out of 5 stars What the Hell?, February 13, 2010

Now maybe it's just me. I think I'm pretty well versed in DC mythos but I didn't follow this story at all. 200 and something pages and I never really knew what was happening or why. I suspect if I knew more about Shadowpact it would have been a better read, but I think after a couple hundred pages I should have been able to follow the story better. I remain a big Giffen fan but this one wasn't for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars "... for on that day, there will be war in Hell.", November 25, 2009

This review is from: Reign in Hell (Paperback)
Reign in Hell is not for the weak of heart, easily disturbed, or any who take offense to all things dealing with the underworld. But, for those with an open mind and a craving for that one great EPIC biblical story that features only the coolest magical DC heroes, this was made for you.

The story is simple at a glance, but very thought provoking. The Lord and Lady of Purgatory unleash a War to gain control of Hell. With an army very sci-fi looking troopers armed with power armor and laser guns, they take a foot hold in the most crowded portion of Hell. And bring to the population the one thing denied to them by the current ruler, and even God himself. Hope. Every evil being on Earth, and any who have fiddled with the dark arts are called to Hell to combat the invasion, while the magical beings who have stayed pure are left to make up their minds. Stop the war, or side with the ones who can bring them an end to their debts and suffering?

The artwork is dark, gritty, and just damn disturbing. Hell is a ruined, twisted version of Earth. The inhabitants are grotesque rotting, monsters. The level of violence is just as grand as the story. (complete with loss of limbs, lips being bitten off, and oceans of blood!)
